my friend.. r u sure of what u read? if its true, Why did the navy keep it underwraps? anti-surface and undersea capability? can they hunt submarines? I think MBLT should clarify this because ayaw kong ma excite sa wala. I'll hold on to it until there is confirmation from MBLT or other credible sources. pero thats a good start. as long as they can blast the fV@ck!*g chinese in the Mischief Reef, i can live with that.

Navy recommissions 4 repaired ships -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BY VICTOR REYES The Philippine Navy is re-deploying today four newly-repaired ships, including a minesweeper frigate which will be sent to guard the waters of Palawan and the disputed Spratlys island in the South China Sea. Navy chief Vice Admiral Ernesto de Leon will send off the ships, which underwent a P45 million repair, from the Navy’s headquarters on Roxas blvd. in Manila. Capt. Geronimo Malabanan, Navy spokesman, said the four ships will be attached to different naval units "to sustain the conduct of naval and maritime operations in their respective AORs (area of responsibilities)." The minesweeper frigate, also known as Patrol Ship 20 and BRP Quezon, will be put under the operational control of the Naval Forces West which has responsibility over Palawan waters and South China Sea area. The Spratlys island, a chain of potentially mineral and oil rich islands and islets, straddles the South China sea. It is being claimed in part or in whole by Philippines, China, Taiwan, Brunei, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The Navy said the frigate is capable of detecting, tracking and destroying hostile undersea and surface crafts; and escorting merchant vessels to protect them from hostile undersea, air and surface craft, among others. It can also conduct naval patrol operations to enforce or assist in the enforcement of customs and maritime laws and regulation, and provide naval gunfire support during amphibious operations. The second biggest Navy ship after the Destroyer Escort which is currently sidelined for repair, the frigate is equipped with a canon, 40 mm anti-aircraft and a 50 caliber machinegun, said Malabanan. Malabanan said the frigate and the three other surface assets of the Navy ships will be dispatched by De Leon as part of the celebration in the upcoming 107th founding anniversary of the Philippine Navy this Friday. The repair of BRP Quezon cost the Navy some P15 million for major repair works, including change of its main engine and repair of machineries and generators. The repair of the ship and the three others was undertaken by the Naval Sea Systems Command. COMMENT: I think its a PCE, the World War II Vintage. previously, they are classified as minesweeper until relegated to patrol duties. Sana di totoo ang hula ko pero malabo talaga na hindi PCE yan.....

It seems that the navy is augmenting its forepower. Do they perceived threats out there in the palawan areas that we are not aware of?. The news is credible. But its good news to know that our navy is now capable of detecting undersea activities. keep it on Navy! |

I dont believe that these ships arent fitted with sonars even before. The sonars makes them detect hostile movements underwater. These ships even have torpedoes even before. These are good for driving away pirates and terrorists ... ... BUT STILL NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH TO WARD OFF A MUCH MODERN SHIP FROM ONE OF OUR NEIGHBORS. Nonetheless, at least we now know that they are there to preempt any initial moves by the Chinese or anyone claiming the Spratly's too ... ... and to protect Malampaya. GOOD JOB, NAVY! :thumb: :thumb: |

BRP Quezon - PS70 I believe this same ship was one of those who tried to ward off the Chinese fisherman, who were believed to be soldiers actually, when they were still constructing the octagon-shaped structures then. BTW, PS20 may probably look like this one below. I am just making a good guess though.

parang generic description of a frigate lang yung statement ng PN. shouldn't imply na they've upgraded these ships with advanced radars, missiles or anything. but still good to hear about the expertise of our Navy's technicians being put to good use.

Will I be seeing depth charges on the side of the freeboard hanging from ropes like what I saw before on a PN ship. This is good news besides seeing the Toyota Mini-Cruiser still in service with the PN and the 1MIB of the LABde. Oh please PN officials please do not put the BRP Humabon to scrap. It would really be nice to see it on Roxas Boulevard as a museum ship. |
