I think these will function like the Cyclone-class ships which carry NSOGs. This is a nice concept. Very suitable for anti-terrorism, anti-piracy, anti-smuggling operations and even COIN-support roles. Crafts this small are okay even without remote-controled heavy caliber guns. But it is ideal that these are equipped with such to eneble it to perform more effectively and even at engaging targets at night. It can even aim better when hitting airborne targets with an automated gun. The 50 cal gun can be automated through the cooperative efforts between the AFP and the Mapua students or other local inventors.
Any idea what type of hull design fits this? |

An official response from the Phil. Navy! INSIDE CEBU By Bobit S. Avila Wednesday, June 11, 2008 , Philstar We’ve got a lot of responses from the articles we’ve been writing on so many issues. Unfortunately we cannot print them all here. But here are two letters that should be of great interest to our readers. The first was in response to our article the other week about the Philippine Navy buying Made-in-the-Philippines Naval vessels, and we got this official reply. “Dear Mr. Avila, The Philippine Navy would like to express its gratitude for your concern in getting the best deal for our Navy. We share your vision of buying the much-needed ships for our Navy from local ship-builders like FBMA Marine Inc. in Cebu. I would like to inform you that in my policy pronouncements in many occasions in the past, my guidance to the Director of the Navy Modernization Office is always to look at the possibility of buying locally. We share with you the same patriotism to “Buy Filipino”. We are also aware of the many benefits and the eventual effect if we source our equipment acquisition from local sources. However, I must point out to you that in the acquisition of military hardware, the Philippine Navy is obliged to abide with our procurement law RA 9184 governing procurement, which is through public bidding. This is to ensure transparency and to get the most value for our peso. I am therefore encouraging all our qualified local shipbuilders to participate in the public bidding for all future ship acquisition for our Navy. Again, we thank you for your concern and rest assured that we in the Philippine Navy share the same sentiments with you to “Buy Filipino”. Signed Rogelio I. Calunsag Vice-Admiral, AFP” Thank you Vice Admiral Calunsag for the official response you gave to this corner. Let me just say that I’m glad that we do have a common desire to help improve the capability of our Navy, (which unfortunately has been the subject of ridicule by our own people especially when they say, we have a navy with no ships) and if possible acquire them locally through the local shipyards like the FBMA Marine, Inc. which is located in Balamban, Cebu. I totally understand that the Navy has to follow the Procurement Law or RA. 9184, which governs the procurement of equipment and the like though public bidding. We know that the spirit of the law is to ensure transparency in such transactions, unfortunately like most government infrastructure projects, the main problem is not the participation of local shipyards in the bidding process, rather the problem is, the Philippine government refuses to pay the contractors or builders on time, which is totally unfair as these companies need to pay the salaries of their workers. If this problem can be fixed, then I’m sure that these shipyards would be more than willing to participate when the bidding is published. |

well, as you can see, it helps when you write the newspaper columnists. if you have complaints , write to the news columnistsand cross your fingers that the AFP is listening. My only criticisim of Mr. Avila's article below is that the "the problem is, the Philippine government refuses to pay the contractors or builders on time, which is totally unfair as these companies need to pay the salaries of their workers. If this problem can be fixed, then I’m sure that these shipyards would be more than willing to participate when the bidding is published." . While this may be true , does it really stop companies whether foreign or local from bidding for Philippine govt projects whether in the AFP or civilian govt agencies?? obviously not. look at the radio project - won by Harris Radio of USA army utility transport - won by korean company. PAF training planes - italian company etc etc etc the main reason , companies are not bidding is because there were simply no projects to be bidded out before because there was no money......To be more specific , there was no budget to buy the equipment, therefore, no projects can be initiated and bidded-out !!! common sense ! dont forget that the billions of pesos were only recently released for the PAF night chopper, training planes, army radios, army transports and now navy multipurpose vessel. |

We need to Improve and Enhance ang mga Filipino defence contractors, We need to Improve research and development. for example: Jet fighter, radars, missiles was invented 50 years ago, di na bago ang ganitong technology, i think kaya na nating exploit kanyang technolgy w/ the help of oher countries and companies. Malaki ang shipbuilding industry natin, di na natin kailangan gumastos ng billion dollars for new frigates and missiles corvettes. again Government and AFP should take lead dito and fixing corruptions in the AFP |
