missiles? as per post from "pachador"; (round 9 posts back)
Im not sure if the news report was that precise though. Whether or not the report was precise, the Navy should do its best to acquire these multi-role OPVs to prepare our military for any eventuality. In fact, our military's weakness was one of the main factors why China braved stealing Mischief Reef from us and why even Vietnam stole one of the islands we occupy. |

I agree. We need better ships with the modern weaponry and electronic suite and the newer superstructure designs. |

By the way, I am surprised to know the improvements made on the Jacinto-class corvettes!![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRP_Artemio_Ricarte_(PS37)
This is the kind of weapon system we need for our interim upgrade/refleeting programs. We should get more of the Cyclone-class ships or simialr size and then arm it with this weapons system. An option for SAMs or anti-ship missiles will be great. We should get at least 12 and deploy these all around our surrouding seas for a set of roles that the Navy must address like anti-smuggling/anti-piracy, maritime resource protection and rescue. Next is the OPVs or multi-role ships. They must at least carry the same suite plus the missile system and a helipad for ASW, and for hunting other surface ships, as well as for other applications. By the way, the M242 Bushmaster 25 mm cannon with "remote control" fire system is effective against airborne targets as well. And at 25mm punching power, it can address most threats like paralyzing or even completely destroying ships, airborne threats like choppers and slow planes, and for clearing beaches in support to landing troops. |

thats great!automated firing systems is the way to go for our current assets. But sadly, these peacocks state are just about it for them. they cant carry out other systems upgrades such as missiles which are important to make them externally a threat. The LPD or MRV that the navy just cureently anounced of procuring is the current wave that Asian navies are having. Turkey and Thailand are evaluating candidates for an LPD,China just got there super LPD on trials, Indonesia has 2 and 2 being built, Malaysia has it on the drawing board. If the LPD program is implemented as the Admiral said within the sonest time, it will make our navy have that big leap in terms of transport and utility capabilities. Add some 3 Seahawks with skua missiles and ASW capabilities, that LPD is one heck of a mothership!

indeed. all new assets must carry that system. the Cyclone-class BRP Mariano Alvarez should be fitted with it as well. |

For all the littoral patrol ships like the BRP Artemio Ricarte and BRP Mariano Alvares, they must carry these; 1) 25mm or 30mm guns integrated into an automated target acquisition and fire control system like what the PS37 has today. Ex. 25mm M242 Bushmaster, the 30mm Phalanx CIWS, or the Israeli-designed 30mm Rafale gun. These setup ensures the effectiveness of the gun in addressing a variety of threats, including airborne targets, day and night. The new ships to be acquired like the bigger ship BRP Artemio Ricarte, these must carry the 76mm Oto Melara or similar guns, plus a helipad. For the bigger Patrol Ships or Multi-role Frigates, all the guns the smaller ships have plus the ASW capability, SAMs, SSMs and modern electronic suites like the AEGIS of the Ticonderoga-class ships. In short, we need 3 types. 1) Fast Patrol Crafts - like the Andrada-class gunboats - for littoral patrols, brown water patrols. - 25mm to 30mm guns with automated fire control and targetting *** number of units to be purchased = 30 2) OPVs / Corvettes - littoral patrols, EEZ protection, anti-piracy, anti-smuggling, rescue - 25mm to 30mm guns with automated fire control and targetting - 76mm Oto Melara guns or similar guns - ramp for fast deployment of RHIB, like that of the BRP Mariano Alvarez *** number of units to be purchased = 12 3) Multi-Role Frigates / Patrol Ships - for external defense and guarding the edges. - 25mm to 30mm guns with automated fire control and targetting (for CIWS) - 76mm Oto Melara guns or similar - ramp or bay for fast deployment of RHIB or hovercrafts - SAM - SSM - ASW - AEGIS or similar suite - helipad for Sea Cobra *** number of units to be purchased = 6 All the Jacinto-class ships and the BRP Mariao Alvarez are okay with the 25-30mm guns with automated fire-control and targetting. This gun is a cost-effective approach. We wont be shooting Migs near our shores anyway. That shall be the responsibility of the Multi-role Frigates and the Fighter Wing. The gun is also okay for shooting down choppers and slow planes like the Cessna or the even typical jetliners flying low anyway. For all OPVs, this RHIB deployment scheme, like in the BRP Mariano Alvarez, is excellent... ![]() The Baynunah-class corvettes are a good concept. It's got helipad and missles. This concept will enable the Navy to readily transform the OPVs into an augmenting force for the Multi-role Frigates in addressing external aggression. ![]() http://pdff.sytes.net/index.php?showtopic=4911 It shall be a nice concept. The OPVs will handle littoral patrols during peacetime and can as well augment the frigates when need arises. |
