Spratly islands prepped to be Philippine tourist spot: report

MANILA (AFP) — The Philippine military is considering developing the disputed Spratly islands into a tourist destination, local news reported Saturday.

Military chief General Hermogenes Esperon was quoted in the Philippine Star as saying that the army would help bring tourists to the white sands and pristine waters of Pag-Asa Island, the largest of the islands in the South China Sea occupied by Filipino forces.

Rosendo Mantes, mayor of Pag-Asa, the Philippine town established on the island, was quoted as saying the area has good diving sites, many of which are still unexplored.

Although the area still lacks the usual amenities such as resorts and hotels, the military hopes to attract people seeking to get close to nature.

Esperon said a navy ship could take tourists to the islands but did not specify how such tours would be arranged.

The Spratlys, a chain of islands and atolls -- believed to be rich in oil and gas deposits -- are claimed in full or in part by Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. All but Brunei have troops posted on some of the islands.

Not a bad idea if the money goes to the military and the development of the islands that we own but i find that a bit dangerous kasi bka umataki mga other claimants maging international problem pa so dapat may talks muna yung mga claiming countries para walang gulo! :patrioticpinoy: may i say not a bad plan for now !!!!!!!!!!!

well, they will just have to make sure that this will not be another source of corruption in the PN, you know, some PN officers may take advantage of the tourists.

they could convert one of the LSTs into a tourist ferry with a few amenities to make the passengers a bit comfortable.

there will always be tourists who will not hesitate to hop aboard to explore new destinations far from the usual safe travel spots.

It is better for us to convert Pag-asa island into a diving spot or resort to attract tourist and gain income for the country than be simply occupied again by other greedy nation.

Since we dont have capable Navy for external defense or no intention yet to improve our Armed forces then by all means the goverment must do it fast to make Pag-asa island a beautiful tourist spot.

pagka-alam ko meron.

pero balita na hardship post ang pag-asa. hirap sa tubig. walang R & R. Malungkot. maganda raw mangisda, pero kung araw-araw kang mangingisda, bad trip na rin yun.

Count me as one interested tourist to go Spratly. Magkano kaya ang pamasahe? The problem is how often the trip would be. If it is a navy ship baka wala nang magpatrolya sa mga dagat natin. Better to tap local shipping lines.
