ANILA, Philippines - Saying that diplomacy is better than war, a ranking official of the Philippine Navy on Tuesday expressed support on the controversial 2005 Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking (JMSU) on the disputed Spratly Island that the government entered with Vietnam and China.

Interviewed during the turnover ceremony of two newly refurbished Navy ships at the Navy headquarters in Manila, Navy vice commander Rear Admiral Amable Tolentino admitted that the Philippine military is inferior to the militaries of the two other claimant countries.

“From a student of regional security, diplomacy is still the best. We avoid war as much as possible. Exploitation of resources by each country, once it overlaps your jurisdiction, there is a possibility of war. So if you have diplomacy, you have dialogues. That is better than going into war, so let me put it that way," Tolentino said.

“We cannot cope with the military (of the claimant countries), that is the reality. That is why, with that reality, we are suggesting a diplomacy. The truth is, let us admit it, let us be realistic, we cannot cope with the capability of the other countries," Tolentino added.

Under the tripartite agreement, seismic surveys would be conducted in the Spratly Islands, which are claimed in part or in whole by the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Brunei.

The survey seeks to conduct a study over 142,886 square kilometers of territory to appraise supposed oil reserves and other natural resources beneath the said group of islands.

On whether the agreement is beneficial to all the three countries involved in the joint study, Tolentino said: “Yes. That is actually our purpose – how to make use of the economic potential of that (dispute area). If its going to benefit all, why not?"

“My opinion on that is that although those in the higher-ups are still talking about it, my opinion is diplomacy is better than going into war. That’s a general statement that I can make. But of course those are political decisions. That's up to the higher-ups. We, in the military, will only implement what is given to us," he added. - GMANews.TV

Again, they always say, WE DONT NEED EXTERNAL DEFENSE, IT'S USELESS. 2020 can wait. But when times like this happens, they simply say we dont have the capability to confront them. And so they will just let the aggressors do what they want and we just keep on pleading for mercy.

KAGAGUHAN TALAGA. :headbang:

ANU BANG MILITARY MERON TAYO?

Masakit man sabihin pero KATANGAHAN NA YAN AT KABOBOBOHAN NG NAMUMUNO AT MAMBABATAS NATIN.

Eh tayo? Yuko n lang ng yuko.

Naman ang gobyerno natin talaga. Tanga sa maraming bagay!

PURO KASI PAGNANAKAW NASA PLANU NILA EH. :dunno:

Napaka-Duwag ng statement ni Admiral Tolentino.Alam naman pala nila yung reality that we are weak. Are we going to stay that way forever??? what plan of action are they going to do in order cope up with the capability of other country.

Diplomacy is not enough if other countries know you cannot do anything if they can get what they want regarding territorial dispute..

Why not do something and use their brain to think of a way and plan carefully to vastly improve the capabilities of our the AFP in defending the country??

Any reason why we cannot modernize our military is not valid anymore because AFP is existing for long time being underequipped and until now modern times but still the same.

kung yun ang tingin si admiral sa navy niya, hindi niya pa rin dapat inamin sa media iyon.
