Death wins in Imus gun duel
By DEL E. VILLANUEVA

IMUS, Cavite – Like cowboys in an old Western movie, a Philippine Navy (PN) man and a member of the Imus Civil Security Unit (CSU) engaged in a gun duel over a minor traffic altercation in this town the other night. Death won the draw.

The fatalities were Huberto Butingan, 56, single, a CSU member detailed at the office of Vice Mayor Mandy Ilano and resident of Villa Nicasia Subdivision, Bayang Luma 2, and Fireman 1st Class (FNI) Dante B. Sablon, 40, married, a navyman assigned to Sangley Point, Cavite City and a resident of Regal Homes, Alapan, Imus, Cavite.

Supt. Ulysses G. Cruz, local police chief, said that the gun duel took place at the ACM Subdivision in Carsadang Bago 2 at around 6 p.m. last Tuesday.

Quoting the investigation report, Cruz said the protagonists first engaged in a collision of their respective "owner-type" jeeps, leading to a brief chase that ended at the ACM Subdivision Gate.

Witnesses told probers that it was Butingan who first alighted from his jeep (DJY-927) with a 9 mm. FEG pistol in hand.

Butingan confronted Sablon who was still inside his jeep but armed with a .45-caliber Remington pistol.

The two had a heated argument and then moments later, fired their guns at each other, Cruz said.

He added that Butingan died on the spot due to multiple bullet wounds in the body while Sablon was hit six times and died on the way to the Our Lady of Pillar Hospital, here.

Tsk tsk. This is an example of lousy gun owners. Dapat nga mas lalo silang maging responsible and cool-headed because they own firearms. Kulang na talaga ang morals and guidance ng mga tao ngayon.
Command is about authority, about appointment to a position. Effective leadership is different. It must be learned and practiced in order for it to rise to the level of art. You must love those you lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment but you cannot lead without it; and without leadership, command is a hollow experience. .. a vacuum often filled with mistrust and ignorance.

The lesson learned here: Never step out of your vehicle to confront an angry/ upset individual, whether your armed or not. You Drive Away, run over the individual with your vehicle if you need to and disable his vehicle.

These are the people who give shooters a bad name.

From the news article, it is apparent that the CSU (aka bodyguard) was the one who escalated the altercation by pulling out a gun, and approaching the navy man with a gun.

Had the navy man survived, he would have had a good chance with a self defense case.

Moral of the story # 1 - never pull out a gun for a stupid traffic altercation.

Moral of the story # 2 - huwag kukuha ng tapang at lakas ng loob sa pusil.

Moral of the story # 3 - if you feel your life is in mortal danger, shoot. do not hesitate. only FPJ survives shooting encounters which has him taking the first shot from the BG.
