Well my only point was to point out how the RP is lagging militarily and technologically, not spark a debate about comparing the US and the RP technologically and culturally. If you don't start comparing, you don't have a standard on which to base one's need to improve oneself on. But then again, a superpower like the US is always an unrealistic standard to compare oneself too. A more realistic comparison, or rather a more realistic goal, would be the RP to strive to become like one of the Asian Tiger economies like Taiwan who have used their prosperity to also arm themselves well militarily- they've even developed their Indigenous Defense Fighter- named after the former President and late son of Chiang-Kai-Shek, Chiang-Ching Kuo.

PhD professors in UP Mechanical Engineering can draft drawings and manufacture that. Believe me they can. The problem lies in corrupt people in government who will either stymie the project and sell it to another Third World Nation or the professors gets a citizenship visa in USA to buy him off. |

hi guys. im new in this forum just want to express myself that we Filipinos are very good. we can manufacture that kind of technology if we have budget for this. I notice here abroad that we Filipinos are one of a kind. I'm very proud. a lot of Filipinos here were involve in the manufacture of one of the sophisticated armament that being used today. Our government should start to compete with other ASEAN countries. |

This can't be given priority over the current needs. Acute need for housing (not only for EP's but even for officers), PAY, retirement benefits, just to name a few. Our PAF is depleted, everything has been downgraded/DOWNsized. UH-1H's are delivered to us, but do any of you know how much of these actually fly or even have engines in them when they were blessed at villamor? Our 2 C-130's are earlier B models- we used to fly a squadron of "H"/L100 models in the 70's-90's. Our 2 Nomad widowmakers are due for de-commisioning in a few years. The 221st has not had a "new" fokker in ages. 250th PAW's F28 flies but is not even used by GMA. So few aircraft that a lot of pilots are now assigned to non-flying duties (air police, intel, finance, combat, etc.). This year we will be receiving a new batch of SF260's which is good news for the SO's at lipa. At present we are leasing our marchetti's we use for training. Majority of our air operations focus on insurgency. Missiles are definitely not in the agenda. Heck we don't even have enough radar site's! |

Enigmata, Well the RP needs some form of air-defense and ground-based SAM platforms should be the current stopgap until the RP DND gets the money for MRFs! And you forgot about the S211s because you did not even mention them as another current stopgap! The AFP can't rely on subsonic jets which can't carry AAMs and those Philippine Marine Bofors AA guns mounted on those trailers forever as their only anti-aircraft defense!! SHEESH! If you can't get planes you might as well get SAMs and modern AA batteries!!!

ManPADS would have been the cheapest Hi-Tech option. But then, the AFP has a security issue and there have been allegations that underpaid troops sold them to the black market just to make ends meet. We'll have to deal with 3rd party Arms dealers (like Yuri Orlov) to get our next big ticket acquisitions as we are losing street cred no thanks to problems in our contract corruption - ridden procurement system |
