New Philippine Air Force chief appointed

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed a new Air Force chief, replacing Lt. Gen. Jose Reyes who is reaching the retirement age of 56, the military said on Wednesday.

Maj. Gen. Horacio Tolentino, the commander of the Air Force Tactical Operations Command, will take over the helm of the Air Force after a turnover rite at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, Metro Manila on Friday, the military news office said in a statement.

Tolentino was a classmate of the current military chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. in the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class 1974, according to the military report.

This is the first time in recent years that the Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff and the commanders of the major services, also including the Army chief Lt. Gen. Romeo Tolentino and the Navy chief Vice Admiral Rogelio Calunsag, belong to a single PMA class.

MANILA, Philippines--Philippine Air Force Chief Lt. Gen. Horacio Tolentino has decided to retire a month early to give Malacañang a wider berth in choosing his successor.

Tolentino wrote higher headquarters expressing his desire to end his term this month in order to give the two most senior Air Force generals a crack at his post.

“I decided to relinquish my post early to give a wider array of options for my successor,” Tolentino told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a phone interview.

Tolentino, who assumed command of the PAF in February 2007, was slated to end his term on Feb. 7 when he turns 56, the mandatory retirement age in the military.

Tolentino explained that the leading candidates for his job, PAF Vice Commander Maj. Gen. Pedro Inserto and Armed Forces of the Philippines Vice Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog, would otherwise not qualify to replace him if he were to complete his term.

“If I finish my term on February 7, they would be disqualified because by then they'd have less than a year of service left,” he said. Ranking military appointees must have at least a year left in the service to qualify for a final posting.

AFP names new Air Force chief

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday said it appointed its third-highest ranking officer to head the Philippine Air Force.

In a press briefing, Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, AFP spokesman, said Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog – who is currently The Deputy Chief of Staff (TDCS) – will assume the post as Air Force chief on Friday.

“General Pedrito Cadungog who is the incumbent Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines will be, has been appointed, will be taking over the helm of the Philippine Air Force tomorrow at 3 p.m.," Bacarro said.

Prior to his position as TDCS, Cadungog was Commander of the Air Education and Training Command in 2007, Chief of Air Staff in 2006, and Wing Commander of the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing in 2003, among others. - GMANews.TV

Cadungog bans porno materials in all PAF facilities

Philippine Air Force commanding general Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog upped the ante of his moral crusade by banning the display and consumption of pornographic materials in all PAF facilities, including the soldiers’ barracks.

Released through the office of the Air Force Adjutant, the order cited the effects of pornography as cited by The Forerunner director Jay Rogers, specifically on the formation of unfavorable effects on beliefs about sexuality and attitude towards the opposite sex.

Rogers claimed in his thesis that frequent exposure to pornography may cause addiction to similar materials. Just like entry-level drugs, the victim may desire for more deviant materials, it reported, claiming further that pornography may lead to family conflict, suffering and sexual dissatisfaction.

General Cadungog, upon assumption as PAF’s top officer, has embarked on a moral regeneration among his personnel. He ordered the holding of mass weddings for unmarried PAF couples on top of pursuing a rigid regimen of cleansing the ranks of immoral activities.

The ban covers the display of nudity and sexually explicit posters, calendars, watching selling and buying of pornographic video discs and the ban against pornographic internet sites. Base commanders were also instructed to punish violators.

“Pornography attacks the dignity of every individual, distorting the appreciation that God’s gift of sex should be shared only within the bonds of marriage,” the order said, adding that said materials are inappropriate in PAF’s decent work environment

So Cadungog is a religious nutter. This anti-porn crusade is just a smokescreen. Resist, secular forces, resist. No to these new prayle and cultists who want to turn the Philippines into one of those religion-based (obviously doesn't necessarily have to be Islamist) countries. Separation of church and state, please.

In a way maaring helpful ito but its meddling in the personal affairs na. Hindi ba dapat may chaplain or counselor sila to focus on this. Dapat ang commander is instead focusing on improving the capabilities of his department. Kahit naman kasal o masyadong madasalin ang sundalo wala naman use ito sa giyera. Not that praying isn't going to be of help ha. What I meant is that trabaho yun ng chaplain o kung sinong ministro ng kinaaaniban ng sundalo. Siya dapat focus sa military agenda. Ano ba itong mga nakukuha ni unano. Nilalayasan na nga siya sa speech niya sa New York ngayon nagkakalat pa ng lagim dito with this kind of pest.
Command is about authority, about appointment to a position. Effective leadership is different. It must be learned and practiced in order for it to rise to the level of art. You must love those you lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment but you cannot lead without it; and without leadership, command is a hollow experience. .. a vacuum often filled with mistrust and ignorance.

A soldier kept happy by its nation will most probably serve it better compared to someone who hates his country's administration.
Banning porn from all military facilities is just stupid and has no sense whatsoever.
Keep any religion out of the state's affairs, the armed forces is under the state, not any religion!

My stand on this is that viewing such material in the PAF's places where they are on duty offices, flightlines or even in the interior of their aircraft may offend other occupants and those offended may file charges under the Sexual Harassment Law. It's just not professional.

Same for PAF, AFP and DND PCs. The Government paid for them to perform their duties and not to surf for, download, store and view NSFW content. This would waste valuable megabytes of filespace, bandwidth and energy. It can also be grounds for sexual harassment suits.

However, it won't be as offesnive if troops has this tucked among their personal effects, viewed while off-duty and discreetly.
