It's 2007. The F5 fleet is in retirement and the modernization program is still just a dream no thanks to a unending insurgency and conract corruption. The realities still hold true for the PAF.

It is still viewed by the AFP leadership as filling a complementary role for the PA, PMC and to an extent, the PNP in the never-ending Counter-Insurgency campaigns it has to put up with. It's bread and butter is to fill to major the following roles:

1) Aerial Mobility: transporting personnel and materiel from home base to theater of operations as well as from base of deployment to combat zone and back. Sa madaling salita, sila ang tsuper ng dyip at tsuper ng trike para sa mga Sundalo ng Army, mga Marines at mga Pulis

Usual Service Packages: Bell UH1H, Lockheed C130

2) Close airsupport: Delivering ordinance to designated targets in support of combat operations by Army, Marine and Police units.

Usual Force Packages: Bell UH1H, MD- MG520, Rockwell OV-10, SM SF 260

3) Aerial reconnaissance: Conducting aerial surveillance to track enemy troop movements in support of combat operations by Army, Marine and Police units
Sa madaling salita, taga-hanap ng nawawalang kalaban para sa mga tropa ng Hukbong Katihan, Marines at Pulisya

Usual Service Packages: Bell UH1H

4) Combat Operations: Securing and conducting conducting assaults on enemy positions in areas designated. Nabuwisit dahil sinosolo ang limelight ng mga tropa ng Hukbong Katihan, Marines at Pulisya kaya naki-sawsaw na rin sila

Usual Force Packages: Airmen and officers in BDA and matching combat boots armed with M16s, CAR-15s, M60 mgs, hand grenades with spare ammo

With the lack of Air Support choppers and the need for a heavy strike aircarft that effectively cripple an anvancing enemy column or enemy defense line, the need for the OV10 light attack plane comes to our attention.

Why the OV10?

It has four 7.62mm M60 machinegun it its sponsoon.

That gives an impressive ROF equal to a 6-barrel Gatling gun that is very effective in breaking enemy columns in a single pass. :thumb:

Not to mention the scary 500 pounder drop bombs, the 20mm gun and the rockets.

I'd say we deploy more OV10 for major offensives like in the current operation against the ASG.

those planes are combat-ineffective and is indeed no longer will fit in a non-conventional warfare... if they are gonna shoot a convoy of jeepney with full of abusayyafs or mi's in an open area then its ok. but enemies in the jungle? i dont think so. however, a modern gunship that are designed to fight a non-conventional warfare that are also equipped with their hitech telescopic infrared thermal cameras and gatling guns like the cobras or augustas, will surely fit to our anti-insurgency campaign, because they can precisely shoot down an enemy footsoldier who are hiding under the banana trees and or tall bushes.

the only thing our government can do is to upgrade our OV-10, as for now, because the battlefield situation in the south is critical. the Bronco pilots must check their planes first before taking off on a mission...I like this planes, keeping this birds in the air must be a priority cause their are the only hope of our boys on the ground than anything else......while the Defender is still grounded after that saturday's crash...... Let's pray that the Broncos will hold on :sniper:

While the PDFF fast jet and conventional warfare nuts are debating what fighter jet or attack helo should field, they seem not to foucs on the real war the PAF is caught up with and is draining the DND's funds dry.

It is stuck in a war that has dragged on for decades on two fronts - the New People's Army and various Islamofascist groups ranging from the MILF to the JI/Abu Sayyaf.

Unfortunately the way the strategy is being played out it can only play a supporting role to the Army and its Generals who have the favor of the Palace.

It's roles in this conflict are strategic and tactical airlift, aerial recon, medivac, close air support. aerial interdiction, civmil ops and as infantry (patrolling areas around Fernando AB)

This would be about tactics the PAF and platforms which you think can use to do a better job in this war.

The short answer would be: more of the same.

This might disappoint the fast jet nuts but I think the PAF is in the right direction when it prioritized the acquisition of night-capable attack and transport helos.

Later on, purchase of prop-driven trainer/attack ac could follow, e.g. Super Tucanos, followed by medium lift transport ac.
