Iran reports test of new fighter jet

TEHRAN, Iran --Iranian air force pilots made successful test flights Thursday in two of Iran's new domestically manufactured fighter jet, the official Islamic Republic News Agency said.

IRNA said the Saegheh jet is a new generation of the Azarakhsh class of fighter planes. Both Azarakhsh and Saegheh mean lightening in Farsi.

"The test flights of a new generation of Azarakhsh jet fighters, called the Saegheh, were complete

d by brave pilots from Iran's air force," Iran's defense minister, Gen. Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, was quoted as saying by IRNA. "The two will officially join the air force on Saturday."

State television showed video of the two blue jets, each with one pilot, taking off and landing. It said the flights each lasted 15 minutes.

The jet was first tested in 2006 and is derived from re-engineered components of U.S. combat aircraft. Iran exhibited the plane last year during large-scale military exercises, claiming the Saegheh is similar to the American F-18 fighter but more powerful.

Iran said in August that it had begun industrial-scale production of the fighter as part of its efforts to become militarily self-sufficient after decades of relying on foreign weapons.

Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers and missiles, the government says. It announced in early 2005 that it had begun making torpedoes.

if were going to remanufacture something why the F-5? IMHO it's relatively dead-end platform and may not be a sound decision to invest there. theres no engine for it! maybe for the F-20.

why not the always beautiful Mirage III. the IAF did it with the KFIR. it's relatively simple, can take normal dimension engine, cheap, lots of wing area, 30mm gun, etc..
maybe if we update the engine, radar,EO,counter measures,etc.. its still a very good design.

askal nga, but we hve to admit that its a step in the right direction for Iran towards self-sufficiency in weapons production.

advantage lang nila is Iran has lots of money to play around with.
To avoid criticism, write nothing, say nothing, do nothing, BE NOTHING.

yes indeed, we could start by making an industry called biofuels and natural gas.

support biofuels by buying biofuel compatible cars and fueling up biofuel or mixed E10, cocodiesel etc if your car is already compatible. there is already a test pilot of biofuel station in quezon circle by flyingV together with Philippine coconut authority (philcoa).

support natural gas, by riding CNG buses, i've seen the Shell CNG station in Mamplasan, and i heard its going to open this late september. when it opens, CNG bus will route Manila-Batangas.
