Navy seizes 23 fishing boats in Celebes Sea
07/30/2007 | 08:28 AM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us Philippine Navy operatives seized at least 23 fishing vessels in a recent crackdown on illegal fishing activities along the Celebes Sea.

Sun.Star General Santos reported Monday that the BRP Sultan Kudarat scoured the area following marine conservationists' complaints about illegal fishing there.

Rampant illegal fishing in Sarangani Bay was among the complaints raised.

Navy Commander Vicente Cejoco, chief of Navy patrol boat BRP Sultan Kudarat, urged illegal fishermen to stop employing unlawful fishing methods for the sake of future generations.

Those caught face charges for using fine meshed nets, commercial fishing without license, employing unlicensed fish workers, expired vessel fishing certificate, safety and radio unit violations, and employment of minors, Cejoco said.

The apprehended fishermen and vessels were formally turned over to proper authorities for prosecution, he said.

While the Navy failed to catch blast-fishing operators during the crackdown, Cejoco warned fishermen to stop engaging in dynamite fishing and using toxic chemicals to catch fish.

Cejoco said the Philippine Navy is conducting the drive "to support the fishing sector and not to oppress the fishermen."

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, which overseas marine resources in the country, ordered them to launch the crackdown on illegal fishing, he added.

Cejoco also issued a warning to operators of unregistered fishing vessels.

"Most often, the unregistered fishing vessels are the ones involved in illegal fishing activities," he said.

Christopher Dearne, a British national engaged in the conservation of the seas, lamented that illegal fishing methods are destroying the marine habitat in the area.

Dearne belongs to a group of private scuba divers regularly out on sea to submerge artificial coral reefs.

He said in an earlier interview that dynamite fishing is common in Celebes Sea and Sarangani Bay when authorities are not patrolling the area. - GMANews.TV

Cops detain 19 Chinese fishermen off Tawi-Tawi
09/06/2007 | 12:23 AM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us Police arrested over the weekend 19 Chinese fishermen caught poaching off Turtle Island, a marine santuary in Tawi-Tawi province.

Online news site Mindanao Examiner reported Wednesday night that the fishermen, all from Hainan province, yielded 19 live turtles and carcasses of 58 turtles.

Unconfirmed reports indicated the fishermen also yielded 10,000 turtle eggs and carcasses of 200 endangered turtles.

The poachers were arrested near Turtle Island, a marine sanctuary, said Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, director of the regional police in the Muslim autonomous region.

Other reports said some 10,000 turtle eggs and carcasses of about 200 endangered turtles were seized from the fishermen, all from Hainan in China.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) head Chief Supt. Joel Goltiao said they filed charges Tuesday against the Chinese poachers.

Goltiao said Pasu Minda Bairulla, a Filipino environment officer assigned in Taganak Island, reported the presence of the poachers near Turtle Island to the police.

A police team backed by Marines, the Coast Guard and the Navy surrounded the ship and arrested the fishermen. - GMANews.TV
