MANILA-- The Philippine Air Force will send its engineering unit to Mindanao this week to undertake infrastructure projects in the conflict-affected communities of Jolo and Basilan, where the military is battling the Abu Sayyaf.

The Air Force chief, Lt. Gen. Horacio Tolentino, said the 355th Aviation Engineering Wing with 60 men would bring tools and heavy equipment to upgrade roads near the combat zone.

“This is part of the humanitarian offensive that the government wants to pursue in Mindanao. Our combat engineers will go to Jolo and Basilan to pave roads there in order to spur economic development,” Tolentino said.

He said the engineering unit, including bulldozers, payloaders, and dump and cargo trucks, would be shipped to the area by a tanker of the Philippine Navy. The team is tentatively set to sail for Wednesday.

“We hope to reduce violence there by showing the community that the government is really serious in its goal of uplifting their lives. We want to provide them with the basic necessities, and roads are one of those,” said Tolentino.
