In my own opinion, our Air Force will do better if we will have a mix of Defenders and Cobras.

The Defenders are nimble gunships that are perfect for fire suppression and support.

They can sneak above the forest canopy FAST and disorient the enemy with their rockets and machineguns,... THEN FLY AWAY TO SAFETY.

These can be deployed in forward air bases safely. Maintaining these will even cost the PAF less.

With Israel's expertise and the renewed interest of the manufacturer in supporting these venerable choppers, i believe these nimble and capable choppers are worth the money.

A nice view of the Israel Hughes Helicopter. It enters in service in 70's and until now.

A hint on how the MD 500 could be fitted with FLIR and new weapon system. But on the sites MD500 of IAF has more powerful engine to allow to carry up to 8 TOW.

How about this one guys NOTAR Seies of the MD 500

MD 600 NOTAR Series

aiming to get a contract for the US Army. Only used Civilian purposes due to lack of power in the engine. New Package was enclosed in a new bid to got the next light helicopter gunship.

Actually the Israelis no longer operate the MG.

Quick question, what is the difference between an MD and MG? I see these used interchangeably and wonder if they are just the same or the terminology is used wrong. TIA.

MD is the right prefix to the number, like MD500.

The MG seems to be the variant indicator

MD520 MG

The MG may denote "military gunship". Could be. I am not sure.

The article prove that there are so many thing that can be done to improve the weapon suite of MG-500. There is no denying that FACT.

Many upgrade packages for MG-500, but how far?? Endurance speacially payload are still on the LESSER SIDE. BIGGER IS BETTER.. :thumb: Peace to all.

MD used to indicate the manufacturer, McDonnell Douglas, like thye MD-80, MD-95(now the Boeing 717). Not sure exactly what the MG stands for, could be what flipz says.

Undergoing testing: Hellfire Junior 2.75" laser-guided rocket...

news: www.lockheedmartin.com/wms/...0&sc=400
thread: http://pdff.sytes.net/index.php?showtopic=3206

Quote:

ORLANDO, FL, March 1, 2006 -- Lockheed Martin yesterday conducted a successful ground-launched medium-range guided test vehicle (GTV) flight of the “HELLFIRE® Junior” missile it is offering for the U.S. government’s Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II requirement.
...
“The rocket hit the target board 2.8 kilometers downrange and the impact was less than half a meter from the laser spot designation,” said Steve Barnoske, director - Tactical Missiles at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.
....
The APKWS II is a 2.75-inch laser-guided rocket that will provide crews of the U.S. Army Apache and Marine Corps Cobra attack helicopters and other platforms with precision-strike capability against targets that do not require a 7-inch HELLFIRE missile—an option not presently available. This low-cost alternative will destroy non-armored targets that are close to civilian assets and/or friendly forces.

(Will naturally require a laser designator; maybe something like FLIR Systems' Brite Star II, a combination FLIR/color-TV-camera/laser rangefinder-target designator to be installed on the ARH (Kiowa Warrior replacement) and UH-1Y.)

Actually, the official designation by the manufacturer is

MDH520G. MDH is McDonnel Douglas Helicopter, 520 is the model and "G" is the subtype.

http://home.comcast.net/~manokski/mg-520.htm

Of course, I havent been using that either.
