Its a great opportunity to have my father visit me here in Canada and have him see this forum which in turn led him to share his stories of sacrifices, heroism, courage of the the AFP during his time.

He was a Sailor aboard PS31 from the Karagatan incident up to the burning of Jolo, to the declaration of Martial Law he was in the tick of it. During the burning of Jolo (1974) PS31 was painted with the sharks image (bow numbers where removed and each Navy ship has its own icon, PS32 has the Bull icon) kaya nga sabi nya sa port para silang corned beef. He was the helmsman during the Sibalu Hill bombardment, the MNLF where using mortars on them but with superb firepower they suppressed the enemy. They participated in providing cover and the retaking of Sibalu Hill sabi nga nya yung 24th MC was with them from Isabela to Marawi then to Jolo mababait yung mga sinakay nilang Marines and pinakain pa sila ng rations and joked sige kuha lang kayo hindi natin alam baka next time wala na kami and it happened these Marines where killed in Sibalu hill and nung matagpuan sila at isakay sa PS31 naka-body bag na. He witnessed how the Air Force strafed Sibalu Hill with the fame F-5 strike of General Rancudo there, kitang kita nila ang action wave after wave of T-28 Tora Tora, F-5, Huey, C-47s. Sabi nga nya everytime they fire on the MNLF, competition for every gun crews of the 3'50, 40mm and 20mm and naging judge pa daw sila ng MNLF kasi bawat tira nila ng mortar and in the shells drop by the sea resulting to dead fish floating kaya biro nila uy yung tumira nito is the best fisherman because many fish floated. Back then AFP members disguised themselves like rebels to conceal their identity, they did it in Basilan ragtag clothing but they were disciplined enough not to hurt civilians, kwento pa nga nya may isang matanda binibigay sa kanya yung Durian wag lang silang saktan and he said sa inyo ho yan and they did not take it.

They also played rescuers of BSDO on July 16,1973 binaba nila yung mga PC to rescue trapped militias using PS31 whale boats and ito ang only casualty ng mga Navy Sailors aboard ships during the MNLF war, sabi nya as the whale boat where landing the PC troopers binanatan sila ng MNLF kasi kulang sila sa Intelligence on enemy strength bumalik yung whale boat nila na patay yung Navy Crew (1 sailor) and yung CO ng PC troops ang nagpatakbo ng whale boat back to PS31 bringing in the casualties. Tandang tanda niya na nagbiro ang Sailor na ito sa Zamboanga City na magsimba naman kayo para mabawas-bawasan ng kasalanan and then he died in action.

In the Karagatan incident Junior officer nila si Adm. Wong and as the story goes lahat ng Vitamins ng barko naibigay sa kanya (my apologies am just basing on his story). Sabi nya kaya nagkaganun masyadong mahigpit si Adm. Wong and he didn't follow the order of CDR. Escala (on passes during the declaration of Martial Law) to give double passes to all personnel, he just gave them 3 days off kaya kinalokohan siya ng crew.

Among the officers, saludo siya kay Jack Tan kasi magaling maghandle ng tao. On the Trillanes story na namudmod ng pera is COMPhilFlt (Commander Philippine Fleet) hindi totoo kasi based on our family experience wala namang nakuhang pera ang Mother ko at Tiyo ko during their Christmas party. Nanghihinayang siya sa ilang junior officers na sumama sa Oakwood, ilan sa mga ito ang mga Tatay e kakilala nya and yung isa nga namatay ang ama without his officer son found guilty or acquitted, yung isa namang LTJG even talked to my mother (at least siya acquitted) sabi nga nya ang tanga ko bakit napasama ako dun hindi ko alam na yun pala ang pakay nila ang mali ko sumama ako. For now the officer has been promoted after his acquittal.

Sayang hindi siya nakapagdala ng mga PN pictures on his way here. He is already retired from the Navy and what a coincidence yung isang MNLF member (sumuko nasa gobyerno) nakasama nya sa Saudi and he told that PS31 bombarded them at the height of the war.

He is now enjoying his retired life with us and sabi nga nya mahirap makipaglaban kung kulang sa Intelligence lalo na kung inland kasi hindi na makakapagbigay ng cover ang Navy Ships and para sa kanya looking at Danilo Atienza Naval Air Base tuwing ihahatid at susunduin ang mother ko sa HQ Phil Fleet, mahina na ang Air Force wala ng Fighter jets and habang lumilipas ang taon pakonti ng pakonti ang mga MG-520 na naka-park sa Sangley (Danilo Atienza Naval Air Base).

He also gave his opinion on the reward na ibibigay sa pagkamatay ni Janjalani. Hindi pwedeng tumanggap ang mga PMC guys (it will make them mercenaries) nito, ibigay na lang nila yung pera sa KAWAL Foundation para sa ma pamilya ng mga nangamatay na AFP personnel malaking tulong pa.

Sana pagtuunan ito ng pansin ng gobyerno how to make the AFP strong to defend the Philippines sovereignty and to protect the freedom each Filipinos enjoy.

>>> To the Mods pardon for the excessive national language. The story is to serve heroism of the men and women of the Philippine Navy.

Tell your father he is a very brave and honest sailor. Great story!

I hope many current sailors are still like him. :ssalute:

:headbang: How did you know it didn't just crash due to a lack of funds for spare parts?

As mentioned my friend bragged that the plane was shot down...

At this time [Siege of Sibalu Hill] the PAF was like the USAF only run by Filipinos. The F-5s were still new, spares, ammo and fuel were paid for by the americans due to the rent of Clark and Subic.

My freind's Dad claims to have known people on the ground seeing the F-5 went down. I don't believe it, I'm just curious if there was truth to this tale.
