no real simulators so they play..er..train using desktop computers instead By PERSEUS ECHEMINADA The Philippine Star For an air force with an acute lack of aircraft, personal computers may be good enough to hone the skills of its pilots. Maj. Gen. Michael Mendoza, chief of air staff, told The STAR that with the lack of fighter jets and training equipment such as flight simulators, Philippine Air Force (PAF) pilots have to make do with office computers at Basa Air Base in Pampanga for their training needs. "It’s compulsory training for pilots," Mendoza said. He lamented that PAF, which turns 60 on July 7, has no combat capability and that in the event of an attack it has to depend on its few trainer jets reconfigured for combat purposes and on its aging Vietnam War era Huey choppers. Mendoza said PAF’s last true blue fighter aircraft – F-5 Freedom Fighter – had already been decommissioned and that the air force will have to wait for two more years to get new fighter planes. He said PAF is trying to figure out which type of aircraft to buy with its P5 billion budget. Many PAF pilots had left the service to work for commercial airlines where "they can hone their skills and at the same time earn more," an air force official said. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=82348 hehehe baka mas magaling pa si pareng toratora sa kanila sa flying sims |

So these pilots train by using MS Flight Simulator, Combat Flight Simulator, Ace Combat 5 or even Battlefield 2? |

If the PAF cannot afford high-end PCs with speedy processors, maxed out RAM and high-performance graphic-processing units (or duped by their buddy contractors who were awarded the contract to supply them with PCs), here are a few good old school flight sims that will run on typical office PCs: Red Baron Red Baron II Aces of the Pacific (you get to fly with the USAFFE as a P40 pilot in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded) Aces Over Europe Falcon 3.0 Falcon 4.0 Jane's USAF SU27 Flanker (Flanker Test Pilot Anatoly Kvotchur had a hand in the game's design) Chuck Yeager's Air Combat Hind Jane's Longbow Jane's Longbow 2 Most run on DOS and or Win 95/98. If you're using XP, you will need DOS or MS Virtual Machine to run these games. If the PAF would need training aids, upgrading 5 PCs to Korean-Owned netcafe standards or even investing in a PS2, Xbox 360 or PS3 and the genuine copies of Ace Combat 5, 0 or 6 would cost much less than a flight of trainingaircraft and simulators |

:aberet: Tora2X, the PAF should hire you as their Flight Sim Training consultant. Good suggestions! Played those games myself before I got my Alienware gamePC. |

The Philippine Flight Simmers group is responsible for this project. They developed the skins, and provided technical support for the PAF's PC-based flight sims. All free of charge. At one point, the TDG was invited to help put together additional PCs. But things were put on hold been because of a CO change, and changes in the personal circumstances of our contacts in the flight sims group. http://timawa.net/forum/index.php?topic=8433.0 |

Tora Tora, You forgot: -Lock-on and -Lock-on 2, where you can fly the A-10, F-15, the MiG29 and other Russian/US/NATO aircraft. -There's also Combat Flight Simulator 2 (the Pacific Theater) Combat Flight Simulator 3 (an improved version of the CFS1 with better European scenarios and more aircraft, supposedly) -the IL2 series, including the recently released IL2:1946 game. |

The PAF should invest in a simulator so its pilots could accumulate the required number of "flying" hours to hone their skills. Although expensive, a simulator would only need electricity to run. No avgas to burn, no spare parts that continually need to be replaced, no possible crash to worry about, etc. etc. Of course, we would still require our pilots some actual flight time. http://pdff.sytes.net/index.php?showtopic=4570

Thanks MSANTOR for the suggestions. I've just seen that improvised flight simulator at Timawa.net and my jaw just dropped!!! Especially after seeing the screencaps. By the way, there's one other sim I forgot to add: Wings Over Vietnam where you get to fly the F8 Crusader and use PAF markings in custom missions like in my new sig below: |
