Philippine Air Force among the weakest in Asean -- PAF

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Air Force has admitted that it is one of the weakest air forces in Southeast Asia but the country’s innate skills in cooperation makes up for its lack of technological and logistical power.

“Honestly, we are among the weakest air forces this time in Southeast Asia, and they [Asean air chiefs] know it. That's not a secret,” Air Force Lieutenant General Horacio Tolentino said on Tuesday when interviewed by reporters about next month’s meeting of air chiefs of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

“But what we can show them is how we will cooperate with them, what gracious hosts we are, and our goodwill,” he added.

The PAF commanding general will lead the Air Force in welcoming the Asean air chiefs who are coming for the 4th Asean Air Chiefs Conference, an annual event aimed at forging deeper friendships among the region's air forces to improve air defense in the region.

Attending the four-day conference are Thailand Air Chief Marshal Chalit Pubhasuk; Indonesia's Air Chief Marshal Herman Prayitno; Singapore Air Force Major General Ng Chee Khern; Brigadier General Dato Paduka Mahmud Saidin, commander of the Royal Brunei Air Force; Colonel Khamphone Sivixay, chief of the Lao People's Army's Air Force Department;

Burma Air Force chief General Myat Hein; General Azizan bin Ariffin, chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force; Lieutenant General Soeung Samnang, commander of the Royal Cambodian Air Force and Major General Le Huu Duc, chief of the Vietnam People's Armed Force Air Defense and Air Force Command.

The air chiefs will arrive on July 1, in time for PAF's anniversary month, and will be in the country until July 5.

“Of course, it's something big for the PAF especially since it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Air Force. It's our chance to continue discussions on what Asean heads of state and defense ministers discussed in terms of security,” said Tolentino.

Highlighting the meet is a symposium on terrorism on July 3, where the air chiefs are set to sign a declaration stating their commitment to continue their efforts in fighting global terrorism.

Lieutenant Colonel Epifanio Panzo Jr. said in an earlier interview that the declaration, while not binding, “is a statement of the air chiefs that says we will not tolerate nor condone terrorism.”

At least two of the visiting air chiefs, Thailand’s Chalit and Vietnam’s Le, have confirmed that they would be holding bilateral talks with Tolentino during their stay here.

“Off hand, I really don't know yet what we will discuss but I guess we will talk about areas where we need cooperation,” Tolentino said.

He said the PAF had no active links with Asean air forces except for training exchanges with Brunei. The conference may well change this as it would open both bilateral and multi-party channels of cooperation, Tolentino said.

“After the conference, it will be easier for us to call up each other and talk about our concerns since we have already met personally and we know each other,” he said.

Its really very embarassing for the Philippines to host such a thing and at the same time celebrate the anniversary and show counterparts from other countries the puny and outdated air force the PAF has. Its like advertising to them how weak the PAF and AFP as a whole is.

Hopefully through this event the Philippines will learn a thing or two from other nations on how they organize and fund their respective air forces.

EVEN BANGLADESH HAS A BETTER AIRFORCE THAN OURS!!

OBVIOUSLY, EVEN IF THE PAF DOES NOT REPORT IT ALL IN THE REGION (AND EVEN OURSELVES) KNOW THAT THE PAF IS THE WEAKEST AND TAKE NOTE: WEAKEST IN ASIA! IT IS NOT NEW NEWS FOR US...

... POOR, POOR WE...

The PAF may be the weakest in the region terms of material assets like combat aircraft. However, it is the wealthiest in terms of combat experience. Its Huey and attack pilots have flown more hours in support of the Army, Marines and Police fighting the NPA, MNLF MILF and ASG not to mention mutinous troops than probably the whole PVNAF throughout the whole Vietnam war.

Not just Burma a lot of poor countries surpassing the philippine airforce with equipment now, look Afghanistan they are now operating a squadron of L-159's ALCA (advance light combat aircraft ) and couple of Hinds.
The Philippines are the weakest in the region because your government always put your country's defense fourth or last when they past there yearly budget. Philippine government need to wake up and look how long you been fighting rebels. The philippine military have too many manpower but lack of equipment.

so he admits the uselessness of his command what a chief!

I seriously doubt if the following folks would call the PAF useless:

- Troops in the KIG who get supplies by air (as well as by ship)

- A platoon commander who gets air support from MD520s and OV-10s, and has his wounded medivac-ed by chopper

- Disaster victims rescued by the 505th SAR

- Local governments of typhoon ravaged areas whose relief supplies arrive by C-130

The PAF is a COIN air force, and is subservient to the needs of the "AFP" -- which some folks have jokingly called the "Army Forces of the Philippines".
