This has been going around for decades already and yet this is still not being addressed effectively.

Illegal fishers resist arrest in Madridejos

The Freeman 02/15/2007

Fishermen who were caught illegally fishing in the seawaters off Madridejos town put up a fight against the pursuing authorities after they fired upon the local Bantay Dagat members who tried to arrest them.

The incident happened about 1 a.m. Tuesday near the Tanguinge Island in Madridejos.

At least seven Bantay Dagat members, escorted by PO1 Antonio Rayco, apprehended light boat F/B Stephanie for fishing within the municipal seawaters and using super light in violation of Section 93 of Republic Act 8550.

A device used for attracting fishes, super light is a banned fishing tool since it can cause negative impact to the fish, said Lou Arciaga, regional information officer of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

She said commercial fishing boats are not allowed within 15 kilometers of the municipal seawater to avoid over fishing and exploitation of fishery resources.

Reports said Daking Escala, the captain and master fisherman of F/B Saint Peter, the mother boat of F/B Stephanie, blocked the pursuing operatives of the Bantay Dagat.

With two of his armed crews as escorts, Escala reportedly told the approaching Bantay Dagat members that they would resist any arrest. "Kung pugson ninyo pagdala ang among light boat magpinusilay ta ani."

PO2 Danny Alburo, of the Madridejos Police Station, yesterday told The Freeman that Bantay Dagat members Vicente Maru and Alberto Tonelete, who already boarded Escala's boat, promptly jumped into the sea upon seeing Escala and his crew armed with three M16 A1 riffles and two .45 caliber pistols.

Alburo said the Bantay Dagat members told them that they also saw three 60-caliber machine guns and 10 hand grenades inside the fishing boat.

The policeman added that they sent three police personnel to reinforce the Bantay Dagat members but the illegal fishermen already left the area.

"Manukol g'yud ni sila, di padakop mga armado gud n'ya mga Ilonggo man kuno og sinulti-an", said Alburo. - Norvie S. Misa

This solidifies the need to field more littoral patrols in our archipelago to thwart crime and protect the environment.

The latest arrest of the Chinese fiserhmen who were sighted in Tubbataha reef is proof of the need here.

MORE PATROL GUNBOATS

yes we need more patrol boats to protect our sea resources

taiwanese, malaysian and indonesian poachers are competing with our poor fishermen because we cannot protect them properly for lack of boats!

That's what makes me fuming the most.

The Chinese seem to feel as if China will get them out of jail even if the commission of the crime was clear.

Of course, we cannot allow our seas to be destroyed by destructive fishing activities and poaching. When such malpractices continue, more small-time fishermen will remain desperate and impoverished.

^ actually, the Navy's inshore patrol capability seems to be well-developed given the fact that it could still perform very well in near-coast operations in spite of lack of material and financial resources. still, a big boost to PN's inshore patrol capabilities can only be done when multi-role fast attack craft (i.e., fast attack craft equipped with SSMs and SAMs) are added into the Navy's inventory.

however, i am still more concerned about the Navy's "inability" to perform offshore patrol operations given the fact that most of the piracy, poaching, smuggling, etc. happen on high seas than on near-coast areas.

I as well.

With these i believe we need more bigger ships. The Navy through PDR may expediate the process of procuring OPVs or corvettes.

A quick fix would be to ask the U.S and South Korea for more Cyclone-class and PKMs respectively.

You are all correct about what the PN must have to counter this abuse of such in our sovereign territorial waters, but also be aware that a strong Naval force does not automatically equate for such to immediately open fire when such intruders are discovered. Don't ever forget that we all belong to such an organization called the UN (global community ika nga). Whether you like it or not, this is the political body in place for us to air such grievances.

Based on our Navy's present assets and what they can only provide must also be a wake up call for those in power to consider what we definitely should have in our arsenal to defend our seas/territory.

It will be a long debate upon what specifically should be deployed in our arsenal because that final decision is a constant must wait and see. So the best thing you Folks here who are alowed to vote for those like me who are not allowed (no thanks to you Drilon) is vote wisely for a start. Believe it or not, this at least is a start. Make us proud :thumb:

think they can understand the need for these littoral ano ba yan?
even the educated one's are showing true colors! it's rare to see these traits in public, they are very good in hiding thier true hides. but you can see a glipse of it now. everyone is in a mad scramble for a peice of the pie!

i really hope atleast one of them are thinking about our territories.
but i wouldnt get my hopes up. i dont think they're that kind of folks.

Well what then would you suggest aside from a San Mig (whew, I'd rather have a Guinness!)? If such is the mentality, then tell me what you want us all to hear instead of venting? Unless, you can take the route of leaving the country and migrating else where? Of which I can and chose not to.

Last time I checked, you can run, and prove yourself to be so worthy in whatever place you may decide to be in, but one fact will remain the same, you still came from this here country of ours. So at least vote wisely while you can. This is one of the best routes you can start with (no matter what).

Do you totally believe that getting away from here will solve what you are experiencing? Then go ahead, it's your life and you are entitled to it for no one is holding you and yours back.

I am coming back and going to do whatever I simply can to help out. Even if it is too miniscule to even think to be considered; I need to do it for this is where I belong (and don't need to prove a damn). With all due respect, such is life and this is us!

p.s.

You see that avatar of mine, believe it or not, that was me when I was 20 years of age (I am 40 now). I was not kidding that I am an Amerasian with blond hair and green eyes (who still carries a Philippine passport with no cares of becoming a US citizen at any time if I wish). You can only imagine what kind of discrimination I went through looking this way, and still love my country the Philippines. How about you? Still need a San Mig or something else?

come to think of it, it's a good strategy to support whoever that person is.

one voice in congress for us will do us a lot. :armywink:

we should have recorded his statement so we can get back at him when he turns his back on us after he wins.

it's a good investment for us. dont you think?
