Commander Flipzi, That was a nice clip from youtube. Gave us a glimpse of what the grease gun can do. From the looks of the Grease gun firing, the velocity does not seem impressive though. From the forums I read from your links, this gun can only be effective at close range say 50 meters. I have not tried this gun before but did try the M15 and Cal. 50 during ROTC days and can attest that this gun is not at par with the M16 or cal.50 MG. This was the same gun that replaced the Thompson sub machinegun during WWII. Based on the experience from the men who actually fired them, they say that its light, compact, durable, easy to clean and maintain (aas it has few parts as compared to their Thompson or M1 Garand), and very reliable (saw this from History Channel). But that was World War 2. Battle conditions are a lot different today. I guess this would be useful for police or Swat Team and not to be used for the battlefront in the south. Your thoughts sir!

Compare apples with apples . . . not oranges. Sub machineguns are CQB weapons, not meant to go against assault rifles. Remember, they only use pistol ammo not rifle rounds. If you want to compare the M3 with a modern day weapon, compare it with another sub-machine gun like an HK MP5. The MP5 fires 9mm ammo; the M3 uses .45 cal. Which do you think would do more damage?
US Army tankers, up until the 90's, were using M3s as their personal weapon. The M3 still has its uses. |

Commander Saver111, do you have any tech specs on these armored vehicles? I tried looking at timawa.net but could not get anything except pictures. Is there a website that I can go to? What is the full name for this vehicle so that I can look it up myself. If I type M3, most websites refer me to the WW2 M3 Grant/Lee Tanks. Thank you sir!

Commander Adroth, I guess you are right. Its not right to compare the M3 to the M16 and other assault rifles. they are in a league of their own. This can be compared to the WW2 German Schmeizer or the Israeli Uzi then. The Grease Gun if I am not mistaken use 9mm as its ammo right? Thanks for the info.

The SMG may have been rendered obsolete by assault rifles as a personal weapon for 1st-line infantry. However as ADRoth has said, they still have vital roles to play in the battlefield. Their primary use would be as Personal Defense Weapons for use by non-combat troops like truck drivers, medics and in armored vehicle crews when they need to defend themselves from attack and they cannot carry assault rifles or carbines because of the weight of the other equipment they carry or the tight spaces they work in (like the interior of a tank). Special Operations Forces could also use SMGs for infil ops where the nature of combat would be up close and personal and travelling light and fast is necessary. With the Grease gun being chambered for .45 gives it a excellent advantage since the round has strong stopping power and if used by a suppressed weapon won't have its muzzle velocity seriously compromised since the .45 is a subsonic round to begin with. The M3A1 can actually go head to head with the H&K UMP45 which costs a lot more. ![]() Caliber: .45ACP, .40SW and 9x19mm Luger/Para Weight: 2.1 - 2.2 kg empty Lenght (stock closed/open): 450 / 600 mm Barrel lenght: 200 mm Rate of fire: 600 - 700 rounds per minute Magazine capacity: 10, 25, 30 rounds Effective range: 100 meters The UMP (Universal Machinen-Pistole = Universal Submachine Gun) had been developed by the Heckler & Koch company of Germany in the mid- to late- 1990s and first appeared on the markets in 1999. The key idea behind the UMP was to ceate lightweight and powerful submachine gun, that also will be cheaper than one of the J&K's flagships, the MP-5. UMP, being targeted primary for USA law enforcement market, first appeared in .45ACP and .40SW chamberings, and later - in 9mm. The UMP is a blowback-operated select-fire submachine gun, being fired from the closed bolt. The receiver is made from the polymer, the controls are fully ambidextrous. UMP can be fired in full-auto, in single shots, and in 2 or 3 round bursts (optional). UMP also has bolt hold-open device, which traps the bolt in the open position when the last round from magazine had been fired. UMP has side-folding buttstock and two set of picatinny rails - one on the top of the receiver, and the other - on the forend. These rails can accept wide variety of sighting and other equipment, such as red-dot sights, laser pointers, tactical grips and flashlights. The barrel has quick mount for snap-on silencer. http://world.guns.ru/smg/smg16-e.htm |
