Given the fact(s) that the Philippine Military as a whole as declined in overall capabilites over the last 25-years I'd be willing to bet the Philippine Navy will continue to operate primarly surplus American and some foreign made hardware. A more realistic Philippine Naval inventory twenty five years from now 'might' consist of: Patrol Force Navy 2 - OLIVER HAZARD PERRY class Missile Frigate - UpGraded with a 16-cell Mk 41 VLS armed with 32-Evolved Sea Sparrow SAM and 8-Harpoon ASM, retaining the 76mm Compacto gun, 20mm Phalanx and Mk32 torpedo tubes. One of this class would be the PA Navy's new Flagship equipped with either two surplus Italian Navy AB-212s or U.S. surplus SH-2F Sea Sprite Anti-Surface Warfare helicopters. 7 - TYPE A69 class Missile Patrol Figate - Ex. French Navy surplus well known for economical operating costs and perfectly designed for coastal missions with an endurance of 25-days and a 4,000+ mile range. This class would replace the Phil Navy's currect World War II PCE class on a one for one basis. Turkey recently procured six and spent $150-Million U.S. to UpGrade them. 3 - JACINTO class Corvettes - UpGraded with a fire control radar and a quad Stinger SAM system. 2 - ISLAND class Offshore Patrol Vessels - Equipped with a large deck aft for landing a medium lift helicopter, possess excellent range of 10,000-miles at 12-knots these would be good for patroling the KIG for their endurance alone. Assault Craft Force Navy 1 - CYCLONE class Long-Range Fast Patrol Gunboat - UpGraded with new radar and stabilized 25mm chain guns & a single quad Stinger SAM system. 3 - MINISTER class Missile Fast Attack Craft - Ex. South African Navy armed with 2-76mm Compacto guns, 2-20mm cannon and 2-.50cal HMG's plus 6-Gabrille short-range Anti-Ship Missiles. These possess the range (3,000-miles at 15-knots) and firepower of a Corvette with cheaper operating and crew training costs. 50 - SEA DOLPHIN class Fast Patrol Gunboat - Surplus South Korean Navy and very heavily armed for inshore/coastal patroling. 12 - SUPER DVORA Mk III class Interceptor Patrol Gunboats - New Israeli manufactured and totally combat proven in service with the Israeli Navy, top speed 60+ mph, maximum patrolling range 1,300-miles at 15-knots thee patrol boat for detecting, intercepting and destroying pirate scum and arms smuggling. This class needs to be license built in great numbers. Logistical And Service Force Navy 1 - THOMPSON class Amphibious Assault Vessel - Floodable stern well for both tracked and wheeled amphibious assault vehicles. UpGraded armament of 2-76mm Compacto guns amidships, and a half-dozen 25mm chain-guns 1 - NEWPORT class Landing Ship Tank - Retaining 20mm Phalanx 2 - FRANK S. BESSON class Landing Ship Vessel - UpGraded with an Air/Surface search radar and re-armed with a pair of stabilized 25mm chain guns. Possibly could procure the ones operated by the U.S. Army? 8 - CB-90 class Fast Assault Landing Craft - Half deployed aboard the LPD. 4 - AVENGER class Mine Hunters - Each Armed with 1 or 2-25mm chain guns 2 - Armed Ocean-going Tugs Naval Air Wing 10 - C-212-400 PATRULLA MPA - Maritime Patrol Aircraft with comfortable 'standup' cabin, long endurance 10-hours, good range, and a 1,000-Lb weapons capablity for short-range anti-surface warfare weapons (Sea-Skuka 9-mile range, radar-guided anti-ship missiles, 70mm rocket pods or .50cal HMG pods) for anti-piracy useage and/or enforcement purposes. Six aircraft operating from Cavite, Luzon and four based in the South at Mactan or Tawi Tawi. 4 - BEECH KING AIR 100 - Fixed wing 4-passenger, twin turbo-prop light aircraft for Multi-engine training, and liaison. All based at Cavite. 6 - TP-290 REDIGO - Turbo-prop 3-seat basic trainers, can double in other roles such as medivac but for the Phil Navy training only. 9 - AB-212 ASW/ASuW Helicopter - All-weather ship-borne Anti-Surface Warfare helicopters all based at Cavite, Luzon. Four of which embarked on the 'Perry missile frigates. 15 - Bo-105C - Surplus, Twin-engine light naval helicopters all UpGraded with nose mted surface search radar, chin ball turreted FLIR and Nightsun 20-million candle-powered search-light, GPS navigation/attack system, and Night Vision Goggles. Armed with 12-round 70mm rocket pods or 20mm GIAT cannon pods for inshore anti-piracy missions. |

comrade Mercenary: don't you think that some of the warships and equipment that you have mentioned there would be too obsolete in 25 years' time? if that would be the case, the Philippine Navy of 2031 would be no different to the Philippine Navy of 2006, which operates World War II-era warships. if the Navy is to consider acquiring surplus warships and equipment during that time, the age should not exceed 15 years.

I might agree! also, too much expensive to operate especially those perry class frigates... hows about a modest but "with teeth" type of ships/fleet? navy ships a very expensive to operate, try a little more modesty and a little up-to-date kind of navy ships... ... comments only. |

Israeli, Hopefully, the Philippine Navy will operate some of these good surplus warships before the year 2025! I'm thinking in terms of realistic here as we ALL know the Philippine still suffers from edemic corruption and the government continues to place it's military as a low priority in terms of yearly budgets. I would make a correction/update that since Great Britain has sold weapons to the Philippines Military in the past (3-JACINTO gun Corvettes, SIMBA 4 x 4 wheeled APC's, and SCORPIAN Light Tanks), the British connection will most likely continue in the future for more weapon's procurement. It's also interesting to know that British warship builders have manufactured most of the western world's warship designs over many years notably the following: NITEROI class Missile Frigate 6 for Brazil LEKIU class Missile Frigate 2 for Malaysia NAKHODA RAGHAM Missle Corvette 3 for Brunei QAHIR class Missile Corvette 2 for Oman KHAMROSIN Anti-Submarine Corvette 2 for Thailand RAMADAN class Missile Fast Attack Craft 6 for Egypt Remember the Ramadan class is based on the CYCLONE class Fast Patrol Gunboat one of the latter in current service with the Philippines Navy. VITA class Missile Fast Attack Craft 4 for Qatar ALL of these excellent classes of modern warships have been built in British shipyards over the past 20-years which brings me to my point that the "British connection" still exists in the Philippines and I believe British built warships would be beneficial for transforming the Philippine's post WW II fleet into a more modern [/I]lethat missile armed Navy that it's neighbors would respect. A Philippine Dream Naval Fleet I'd like to see would be: PATROL FORCE NAVY FLOREAL class Missile Offshore Patrol Vessel (9) Five based at Cavite, Luzon and 4 based at Davoa in the Southern Philippines. QAHIR class Missile Corvette (6) Four based at Cavite, Luzon and two at Palawan. JACINTO class Missile Corvette (3) Equipped with an Air/Surface search radar & new Fire control radar and armed with a quad Stinger SAM system, all still based at Cebu. ASSAULT CRAFT FORCE NAVY COMBATTE I class Missile Fast Attack Craft (24) Each armed with a 40mm auto Breda type 70 forward, 2-.50cal HMG's amidships, a Sadral Mistral sextupule SAM system aft, two twin launchers with 4-Sea Skuka radar guided anti-ship missiles, and a single 25mm chain gun on the stern. Eight based at Cavite, Luzon, 4 based at Palawan, 6 based at Cebu, and 6 based at Davoa, Mindinao. CYCLONE class Missile Fast Patrol Gunboat (6) All based at Davoa, Mindinao, and re-armed with a sextupule Sadral Mistral SAM system, 2-25mm low-angle Chain guns, and 4-.50cal HMG's. SUPER DVORA MK III class Interceptor Patrol Gunboat (60) Twelve based at Cavite, Luzon, 6 based at Palawan, 4 based at Paga Asa, 8 based at Leyte Gulf, 12 based at Cebu, 8 based at Tawi Tawi, and 10 based at Davoa, Mindinao. [/B]LOGISTICAL & SERVICE FORCE NAVY ENDURANCE class Missile LPD (2) Each armed with a 16-cell VLS with Barak point-defense SAM, 1-76mm Compacto gun, and 6-25mm chain guns. Equipped with a hanger & deck for 4 AS-532UL Cougar medium lift assualt helicopters. Floodable stern well for launching tracked and wheeled amphibious assault vehicles. Both based at Cavite Luzon. JASON class Large LST (8) Each armed with a 76mm dual-purpose Compacto gun on the bow, and 4-25mm chain guns amidships covering the helicopter deck. Four of these LST's would be based at Cavite, Luzon and 4- based at Cebu. FRANK S. BESSON class LSV (10) All armed with 2-low angle 25mm chain guns and equipped with a helicopter deck. Four based at Cavite, Luzon, 1 at Palawan, 3 based at Cebu, and 2 based at Davoa. CB-90 class Fast Assault Landing Boat (40) All armed with a 'breach-loaded' 120mm mortar with twenty based at Cavite, Luzon and the rest in detachments of 5 each at Palawan, Cebu, Tawi Tawi, and Davoa. GAETA class Mine Hunter (8) Five based at Cavite, Luzon and 3 based at Davoa, Mindinao. Ocean capable 'armed' Repair Tug (4) Two based at Cavite, Luzon and one each based at Cebu and Davoa. Fast Fleet Replenishment Vessel (2) Equipped with a hanger and deck for supporting 2 AS-532UL Cougar medium lift helicopters. Each vessel armed with 4-25mm low-angle chain guns for anti-piracy defence plus 2-sextupule Sadral Mistral SAM systems for and aft. Both based at Cavite. Luzon. PHILIPPINE NAVAL AIR WING C-212-400 PATRULLA Maritime Patrol Aircraft (14) Eight 'armed' MPA's based at Cavite, Luzon, 3 based at Paga Asa, and 3 based at Davoa, Mindinao. Beech KING AIR 100 (6) All based at Cavite, Luzon utilized for multi-engine training and 4-passenger VIP aircraft. TP-290 REDIGO (10) Turboprop Primary Trainer can also peform light liaison duties if needed. All based at Cavite, Luzon. Agusta A-109K Mk II (20) All weather radar, FLIR, Nightsun search light equipped Light Naval Attack Helicopter. Armament options: 2-Sea Skuka radar-guided Anti-Ship Missiles, or 4-Hellfire laser-guided missiles, or 2-12 round 81mm rocket pods, or 2-20mm Giat cannon pods (180-rounds per pod). Twelve helicopters would be based out of Cavite, Luzon to support the FLOREAL class Missile armed OPV's and provide enough helo's for land-based training requirements. Four each based at Cebu and Davoa. AS-532 UL COUGAR medium lift, all weather Assault and Vertical Replenishment Helicopters. (10) Three each based on each of two Endurance class LPD's and the rest land based at Cavite for pilot & crew training. Of course this is a nice DREAM Phil. Navy! |

^ ah. i see. i got your point clearly, comrade Mercenary. ![]() however, i would like to express my reservations on the idea of buying surplus warships such as Perry class frigates, although i am more open on the option of leasing some of them while the PN waits for the arrival of the newly-built ships. supposing the PN does buy surplus warships such as Perry class frigates and Castle class OPVs. by 2025, these warships would be obsolete, bringing the PN again to its old status of operating Jurassic-era warships. that brings me to my argument of having newly-built warships for the PN. although the very high acquisition cost might be a disadvantage for a cash-strapped navy like the PN, the long-term advantages of buying newly-built ships should be given more weight. a ship that is built in 2005 or 2006 would surely be more economical to operate in the long run as compared to a surplus warship that would be more costly due to regular upgrading maintenance checks. a newly-built ship will also be less maintenance intensive, thus it will spend more time in operation as compared to a surplus warship that will surely be spending more time at the drydock for repairs and upgrading. again, to the topic of how the PN would look like 25 years from now, let me revise part of my prediction. instead of having frigates in its inventory, i see the, hopefully, financially well-off PN spending more money in smaller warships such as guided-missile corvettes and offshore patrol vessels. the money that could be spent on just one guided-missile frigate could be used instead to buy two or three guided-missile corvettes. perhaps having 12 guided-missile corvettes and 12 offshore patrol vessels, along with three diesel-electric submarines, a flotilla of missile boats and regular patrol boats and fast patrol crafts, eight Endurance class LPDs, several multi-role tenders and several mine countermeasures vessels, would not be that bad for a future PN, right?
