GOOD RIDDANCE! http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/topofthehour.aspx?StoryId=39326 military task force on Saturday launched a major operation at the Bonifacio Naval Station in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City to evict dozens of retired officers who have been squatting on the base, in some cases for more than a decade. At least one person was arrested as soldiers backed by rifle-wielding troops and heavy equipment forced their way into the homes of retired generals who have refused to vacate their housing to make way for active-duty troops. Retired Marine Col. Pablo Viray, dressed in his old combat uniform, tried to frighten off the eviction teams, telling them Saturday, "I am a Marine. This is not a war. Look at you, carrying a gun. Shame on you." A brief scuffle broke out before the troops forced their way into his house, packing the Viray family's belongings into cardboard boxes for their forced relocation. Viray threatened to file robbery charges against those involved in the evictions. "We have a chain of command and that is the flag officer in command. We respect our retired officers but the chain of command has spoken," said Navy spokesman Commander Giovanni Bacordo. The military has ordered about 56 retired officers and their families to leave their state-provided housing inside the naval station, citing regulations that officers should leave such housing within 60 days after retirement. Many of the retired officers have agreed to move out but more than a dozen others have vowed to resist, insisting that they are entitled to the land they are occupying. Military officials say the retired officers must go, citing the frequent complaints by younger officers who say they are forced to rent houses off-base due to the lack of military housing. AFP |
