counting forward operating bases, radar stations, command/control/communications/intelligence or information networks, ground-based defense including electronic warfare, and perimeter security.

gee-whiz fighters are pointless without radar to find targets and well-secured airbases to operate from. what philosophy to use: sprawling superbases or highly-mobile units dotting the countryside. how to maximize each peso invested.

how can a modern air force survive the greatest weapon any enemy can bring to bear: the element of surprise, aka the pre-emptive strike re the Six-Day War, the Nazi destruction of the air arm of the Red Army prior to the invasion of Stalin’s USSR, and Desert Storm.

the experience of Third World air forces in low-intensity conflicts re the “bush wars” of Africa, the insurgencies of LatAm, and the campaigns of the Thai AF against an assortment of rebel bands.

lessons from successes and failures. more later… :crawling:

PAF holds base defense drills

By Rudy Santos
The Philippine Star 04/28/2006

Philippine Air Force (PAF) personnel conducted exercises yesterday under the Camp Defense Plan for Villamor Air Base and adjacent critical facilities, including the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Airmen from various units were deployed to the main gate of the Air Force headquarters bringing with them their high powered firearms, including 60mm mortars and sniper rifles.

PAF spokesman Col. Restituto Padilla said the drills were necessary to keep a high state of readiness to defend Villamor Air Base, the headquarters of the PAF.

Exercises involved personnel designated as the Ready Reserve Group and includes units from the Air Force’s 520th Air Base Wing, the 720th Special Operations Group and Headquarters Service Support Group.

The drills includes combat maneuvers, battle formations and familiarization firing of weapons at the Philippine Army Adventure Camp in Fort Bonifacio.

Meanwhile, a twin engine aircraft with 12 passengers on board swerved to the grassy portion of the Manila Domestic Airport runway while rolling on the taxiway delta en route to the terminal due to a hydraulic problem with the steering.

No injuries were reported.

The Domier aircaft, piloted by Capt. Alberto Pamplona, was towed immediately from the grassy portion of the runway to prevent delays.

Base defense drills are really necessary to maintain a high state of readiness during emergencies.

BUT COME TO THINK OF IT, WHAT'S IN OUR AIR FORCE BASES THAT NEEDS MUCH PROTECTION ANYWAY?

No fighters..., no modern air assets or missile systems nor even radars or modern communication equipments. Baka sayang lang pera na nagastos sa mga drills n ayan? :dunno: What do these bases need to have?

Taman nga ang sniper rifles at mortars. Pero mukhang may kulang pa. Dapat may armored vehicles din like the Simba or M113. Dapat din mag sapat na firefighting equipments at vehicles. Mahalaga ang NVG at sniper riles lalo na sa mga base sa probinsya.

Our airforce may consist largely of Vietnam-war vintage helicopters, attack planes and transportsand a few more recent light attack helos and 4 do-it-all trainer jets.

However, airpower has given the AFP it's biggest edge against our insurgent and terrorist threats since they can rain prompt and effective firepower on call, an unparalleled view of the battlefield and the ability to bring men and materiel in and out of the most inaccessible terrain fast.

It follows that our airbases are imnportant links in the Logistics chain in the COIN campaign since this is where supplies and troops pass through to the frontlines and back.

What i would like to see 10 years from is that our air force bases will be equiped with modern radar its ieither permanent or mobile platform and air defense system.

We need more equipment for the PAF.

With the concern on the radars, i believe we should immediately build a radar in areas which have a considerable value for civilain and military use.

I am considering a joint-use here. The one in Lubang is a good platform. The military and civilians are using this.

I suggest we upgrade the radar in Ilocos Norte into a joint-use facility. NEDA may help us a lot by labelling this undertaking as economically beneficial.

We can also set up a similar facility covering the Mindanao area.

This should be our priority. The next phase is to put up secondary radar facilities across the country to cover strategic areas.

But these radars will be useless if we dont have a squadron of fighter-interceptors that will implement what the setting up of radars was for.

I suggest, after the two additional major joint-use facility have been set up, we should now get our first squadron of MRFs.

much better! :agree: for economic purpose radars should be dual use for both military and civilian. i also support that for base security we need armored vehicles and sniper teams with NVG capable like the RAF Regiment.

... but as per schedule of the AFP-PAF to have MRFs is on the year 2017 (i think); if we have any fighters at all, then for me AFP should install mobile SAMs/AA platformsfor protection of not only radars but the airbase itself (i wonder why the PAF would buy MRFs in 2017? i wonder why... we also need fighters, not just radars...)..

:agree:

We already have that in the PAF combat groups. Aside from upgrading their equipment, in my honest opinion, they should be downscaled and re-oriented for base defense and to supplement the 710th SpOW.

I consider it a waste of resources if they're just used to do jobs the Army, Marines and the PNP can do namely to do the actual shooting against insurgents. The money used to equip, feed, clothe and house large numbers of infantrymen in PAF BDA is better used to put more mothballed Hueys, Defenders, OV10s, SF260s or even S211s back into airworthiness or upgrade and buy new RADAR sets.
