RUGBY 7’s TOURNAMENT

GAME 1

PAF Team perform well in only their 2nd "hit out" in a full contact tournament.

Here are extracts of a report to be found in another website:

http://pinoysports.proboards33.com/index.c...read=1128332773

"The all-Filipino, PAF 1 team impressed everyone as they were playing in only their second day of full contact rugby. They had their debut a few weeks ago at the Fat Boy 10’s Tournament at their own home field in Clark Airbase and obviously learnt a lot from the experience. On Saturday they played really well, putting together play sequences where the ball went thro up to 10 pairs of hands – not easy in the slippy conditions. Lack of experience and a wet ball meant that they didn’t quite manage to capitalize on the advantage that they gained and – as always in 7’s – a little bit of luck helps a lot. Anyway, the PAF and MAAP were hosted to food and drinks by Randell Carmen of Alabang Eagles before they set out on the long trek back to Clark and Bataan respectively. And I am sure there would have been non-stop talk as they trundled up the Northern Expressway as to how they can get back in the game next week. After all they will have home ground advantage!"

GAME 2

Sounds like the PAF team played better last W/E on their home ground with the games being played at Clark Airfield. Here is the report extract:

"The PAF played really well this weekend - they are improving all the time. There were much stronger attacking moves by the team and they scored some points. They only lost to MAAP 2 by one try, so that was a very close game. One of their star players, Hermie - a 23yr old, 200 pound ball of fire - was unlucky to miss his second try of the day when his opposite number managed to knock the ball out of his hand just as he went to touch down and score a try. "

Again complete match report can be read on the following Pinoy sports website:

http://pinoysports.proboards33.com/index.c...28332773&page=1

GAME 3

Limited Action with the PAF boys on the W/E, but they've got a big one next week.

"In Division B1, the Nomads Lizards are at the top of the League table with 21 points, after playing all their 6 games. Their closest rivals, Makati Chiefs, who now have 18 points, have also played all their games. So the Lizards are playing in the Division B finals. The Alabang Ibon and PAF1 are running 3rd and 4th respectively but have only played 4 games each.

There were no Division B2 games last weekend as Cebu and the PAF will be traveling to Manila next week (Saturday October 22) to play all their pool games to see who will be in the Division B Finals against the Nomads Lizards. So its open book and they have plenty to play for.

So it looks like being an exciting Finals next week! It will be an ALL DAY affair at Nomads with Junior’s, Women’s and Men’s games starting at 9am and leading up to the Finals at the end of the afternoon. There will be a prize giving, drinks and food after the games at the Nomads Clubhouse".

More US troops arrive for
military exercises in Luzon
By Mark Louie P. Roxas And Celso M. Cajucom, Central Luzon Bureau

PALAYAN CITY: At least 2,000 US Marines led by Col. Johnson Miller, commanding officer of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Okinawa, Japan, arrived on CH46E sea knight helicopters and met Thursday with 100 Philippine Marines who arrived on a C-130 transport plane at Fort Magsaysay ‘s airstrip at 11 a.m.
A total 4,500 US Marine and Navy servicemen will participate in the 17-day military exercises with Philippine troops on talon vision and amphibious landing exercises in Nueva Ecija and Cavite.

Capt. Burrell Parmer, spokesman for the US contingent, said that US Marines and Navy men were flown here by batches from Okinawa and Sasebo in Japan.

Parmer said US military units involved in the Talon Vision and amphibious landing exercises include soldiers from the 31st Marine Expeditionary United of the US Marine Corps based in Okinawa and sailors from the Forward-Deployed Amphibious Ready Group of the Amphibious Squadron 11 of the Combined Task Force 76 of the US Navy. Some personnel of the task force have been deployed in Iraq.

Capt. Joselito Munar of the Philippine Air Force, spokesman for the Philippine contingent, said that US participating units are being joined by Armed Forces of the Philippines counterparts from the marine and air force branches.

US military aircraft involved the joint military exercises include the AV-8B Harriers jump jets, KC-130 Hercules cargo airplanes and several types of helicopters such as the twin-rotor CH-46 Sea Knights, CH-53D Sea Stallions UH-1N Hueys and the AH1W Super Cobra attack choppers.

The exercises include live fire exercises at the Crow Valley Firing Range in Capas, Tarlac, and Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija.
The exercises will be based mostly at Clark zone, but a simulated amphibious seizure of a hostile airfield will be conducted in Cavite.

The continuing RP-US military exercises have nothing to do with the US military activities in Mindanao, maintains the US and Philippine military.

The talon vision exercises are intended to conduct bilateral training between the Philippine and the US military to maintain readiness and sustain the long security assistance relationship between the two countries.

Parmer explained that US personnel may be allowed to go out on liberty to give them time to buy souvenirs or join organized events and tours.

The US government has also allocated some $100,000 for civil military projects of the American participants, which will include medical and dental missions as well as improvements on infrastructure, such as school buildings, and donations of school supplies, like books and computers, to selected communities.

Looks like some PAF players made it to the National Rugby 7s team:

SPONSOR A PLAYER

NOMADS SPORTS CLUB

The PRFU is accredited by the Philippine Olympic Committee to run the SEA Games Rugby 7's. However, because Rugby is not a "full status" sport in the SEA Games we will receive no funding or assistance from the POC.
Therefore we are looking for sponsorship

The Philippines National 7's Squad comprises 20 young talented FILIPINO players who are all looking forward to the opportunity to represent their country for the first time. These boys are students, PAF servicemen and factory workers and come from all over the country including as far away as Cebu and Pampanga. We are also hoping to have two young, but very experienced, Filipino players come up from Australia.

We need your support

We are offering individual sponsorships of our players to the rugby community. Minimum offer P5000 per player/shirt. Offers above this minimum are gratefully accepted. In return each sponsor will receive
• A PRFU National Rugby Shirt, with your own name (or company) on it

Indonesian rugby flag flies the flag in international debut

Geoffrey Atkinson, The Jakarta Post/Jakarta

Indonesia is set to be awarded full membership in the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) following a historic silver-medal performance in the exhibition games played in conjunction with the 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Manila last weekend.

It was the first time a full national team has represented Indonesia, and also the first full international to be played on Philippine soil.

"This is a great honor and a giant step forward for Indonesian rugby," said Indonesian Development Rugby (IDR) president Andrew Nugroho on his return from the seven-a-side tournament in Manila. "It reflects the hard work of the committee and the dedication of our Indonesian players whose efforts on the field have made all this possible. We are extremely proud of them."

Indonesia's ARFU status will be ratified at the All-Asian body's annual meeting in Lahore, Pakistan, next week and comes less than two years after Indonesian Development Rugby (IDR) was formed in Jakarta. The Lahore meeting will be attended by IDR secretary Bill Ryan.

The Philippine exhibition tournament -- which brought together 12 teams from around the region -- is expected to see rugby football receive official SEA Games status before 2007 in Thailand.

"We are hopeful as a full national team that we will be in the medal running," Andrew said.

Only Indonesia and the Philippines managed to field full national sides last weekend. Both Singapore and Macau had entered national teams, but where made up predominantly by expatriate players. The tournament was won by Borneo who fielded six, full-time rugby professionals from Fiji in the finals. They beat the Singapore Barbarians 50-5.

In the national final the Philippines beat Indonesia 27-5. The 16-man Indonesian squad had players from West Irian, Jakarta, Kalimantan and North Maluku. All players received field time in the five matches played on the weekend.
"Bringing together players from all over Indonesia is our major challenge," said Andrew. "We are trying to establish regional competitions in as many provinces as possible and concentrate on rugby at school and junior levels."

All of this will take funding and manpower.

"Indonesia has a mighty rugby nursery -- the trick for us will be establishing teams, providing coaching and facilities all over the nation and then gathering them together under one umbrella for national matches," Andrew said.
"The vast distances and costs of air travel and accommodation mean we have a lot to work on." Indonesian rugby is an amateur organization run by a committee that donates its time for free.

They are sponsored by multinational construction company Thiess and the Kabelvision cable network.

With acceptance to the ARFU, Indonesia is expected to form the Indonesia Rugby Football Union (IRFU) now operating under the IDR banner. The IDR will continue to assist with development of national players and juniors, but the IRFU will take over full responsibility for the running of the game in Indonesia.

"We are now in a league of nations where rugby is largely administered and coached by full-time professionals from around the globe," Andrew said. "We are hoping businesses and individuals in Indonesia will be part of our growing support base. It's a big challenge but it's a challenge we are looking forward to."

Indonesia's next major international is expected to be at the 2006 Asia Rugby Championships in Sri Lanka.

Forum posting of Alabang Eagles Manager witnessing the Philippines v Indonesia match:

http://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1087691

"PHILIPPINES WIN!!!! YEAH!!
actually i couldn't tell you how many golds we won, but my brother said we won a good majority of them.

also i'm proud to announce that the Philippine National Rugby Team won the gold against Indonesia! I'm the manager of the Alabang Eagles, a very young club about 3 years old, which at first consisted of mostly expats from Austrailia, England, etc. and just recently, they started to get more filipino's to play, including my brother who just started a good 3-4 months ago. Rugby was pretty new to me as well. i've grown to really love my players. so it made me extremely happy, that 4 of my boys were selected to join the VERY FIRST ALL FILIPINO TEAM! previously the National team was made up of expats. Other filipinos were picked from The Philippine Airforcethe MAAP club (the merchant marines), Brent High School rugby team, Warringa Rugby Club from Austrailia, Cebu Dragons (a brand new club) and International School of Manila and my boys from the Alabang Eagles. though i wasn't involved in the training sessions, or managed the team, i still was involved in small ways, like offering a room to a few players to spend the night, and driving them to training sessions. basically for the past 5 weeks, i've grown attached to these guys.

i wasn't sure how they were going to do. Rugby is only an affiliated sport in the SEA games, so the tournament was held at the Nomads Rugby club in Paranque. they played a practice game against the Singapore Barbarians, and they were thrashed. they were dropping balls, missing tackles, the lines were all over the place.

then came the game against Indonesia for the gold. and i couldn't believe it!! they were making try after try! the place went NUTS!! i just wanted to express how happy i am that my boys made it..considering Rugby is brand new to them, and that they made the most out of their training sessions.

oh, and my brother made his first try!! it's too bad it wasn't for the Eagles, but for the Makati Cheifs who were running low on players!"

Picture of the team appears on this site:

http://www.manila10s.com/participating_teams.php

Philippine Air Force :patrioticpinoy:

Formed 18months ago the PAF become competitive in contact rugby at 7s, 10s and 15-a-side rugby, and have competed in the PRFU leagues with enthusiasm and great pride. Whilst initially being the whipping boys they are now more competitive and have won several games against more experienced sides.

Comprising of servicemen from the 600th ABW at Clark Air Base in Pampanga, the PAF are developing fast. Supported by their Brigadier General Gilbert L. LLanto, and Lt. Colonel Bob Creus, they now have a squad of 24 players, are recruiting more each week, and have put in place plans to develop a Junior Touch Rugby team at the base.

They are also hoping to stage a Tournament at their own field at Clark in conjunction with their sister club, Manila Nomads in order to raise funds to assist in their, and the Nomads continuing rugby development plans. Sponsors are being lined up from corporations and individuals to ensure the success of their initiative.

Unlike the other all-Filipino teams the PAF are blessed with large powerful players such as Sgt Elmer PAGENTE, Sgt WING, HERMIE the prop, and the 200lb forward LAURO DAVID. They also have genuine pace in the shape of Rey Samson at centre and flying winger simply known as "THE ACTOR"!!

Several of the PAF guys were selected for the Philippine National Sevens Squad for the SEA games in December 2005. Sgt Elmer PAGENTE had the distinction of being selected and playing for the National Team.

Coached by Alan McConnell, the Nomads Coach, the PAF are now being supported by several experienced rugby players who live in Pampanga and who are assisting in fast- tracking the team’s development. They, and others ,will be a permanent feature of the PAF team throughout the year.

“We are very happy to be part of the Nomads Manila Tens in 2006, and we look upon the event as a learning experience to help us further develop our skills and understanding of RUGBY FOOTBALL" says Lt Colonel Creus. "Our Coach has helped us progress quickly, and our sister club ,the Nomads are always helping us ,through joint training sessions and games. We love Rugby Football"

The Air Force Base at Villamor (close to Nomads) is the latest group to benefit from the Nomads help. Alan McConell has already introduced and agreed a coaching development program with the PAF performance athletes at Villamor.

"Within 12 months we shall be selecting from a stronger player base, with fulltime sportsmen from the PAF joining the overall squad for tournaments." said Col Creus.

Its fair to say that while the PAF may not be flying too high at this time, they have certainly taken off and are enjoying every minute of the journey.
