I know the F5As and Crusaders are gone, but I'm just wondering if anyone here knows when was the last time that PAF F5As and F8s went to the United States on a sort of air-to-air competition versus US and other foreign squadrons- like "Red Flag" and "Blue Flag"? This came across my mind the other day when I read a Combat Aircraft Magazine article that featured Canadian Air Force Hornets and German Air Force Tornadoes simulating agressor MiG23s all whooping local US ANG squadrons as well as the famed USAF 391st squadron in certain respects. Wonder if PAF F5As ever beat their USAF, ROKAF or other Allied counterparts? |

The F-5, F-8's and T-33's did not travel to the US but they did participate in several Cope Thunder exercises when the US was still at Clark. In addition to the US assets, the PAF participated together with aircraft from Singapore and Thailand in those exercises. Singapore would frequently send their A-4Ss while we would participate with T-33's flying FACs or F-8s flying air support or CAP missions. I've been told that we did pretty well though at one time we did lose a T-33 during the exercise. Cope Thunder exercises are now held in Alaska. |

Wasn't it before the Singaporean A-4S were actually based there? |

Im not sure about when Singapore A-4s were permanently based at Clark but they did come by to participate in Cope Thunder exercises together with the PAF. Singapore did maintain detachments at Clark though. If I recall correctly, they even lost an A-4 as well during one of the training exercises (not Cope Thunder though). |

I just could not remember where I've read it long time ago, but just like what the Singaporeans are doing now, they are basing some of their assets outside their country. It was not public knowledge of what they were doing here before since they are dealing with the U.S. directly and not us. It's like we've been asking for the U.S. some rental fees, with them sub-leasing the same to others with out us knowing it. Or, our gov't have knowledge about it in exchange for a free air defence for our country provided by them. |

Singaporean F-16s and Apaches are based in the US. the RSAF also has detachments in France and a base leased from Australia.Check out their website. http://www.mindef.gov.sg/rsaf/main.asp Also, believe it or not, but Singapore's Centurion tanks are based in Southern Taiwan, even if Singapore recognizes Beijing as "the one China" and not Taipei/the ROC. |

This is not about tha PAF but it is so loaded with so many things between the lines that I feel a lot of people, not just the PAF, can learn from it. There is a bit of dramatization but everything else is accurate. http://www.hulu.com/watch/24197/fighter-pi...ilitary-and-War Gives one an idea why doctrine should be established before any equipment is choosen. Note that even on what is popularly perceived as a fighter v. fighter training evolution, all the cards were laid on the table (transport, strke, sar and so on). |
