PMA gives achievement award to Thai general from Batch 1981 By YUL MALICSE Royal Thai Army Maj. Gen. Iwahip Netniyom, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), and a member of the PMA "Dimalupig" Class of 1981, was given a PMA Achievement Award at the 2006 PMA homecoming last Saturday in Fort Del Pilar, Baguio City. The award was presented to Netniyom by PMA Superintendent Brig. Gen. Leopoldo L. Maligalig on the second day of the three-day 2006 PMA alumni homecoming. Netniyom joined his "mistahs" in the class’ silver jubilee celebration. Netniyom graduated summa cum laude and No. 1 of 158 in the graduation merit roll of 1981 of the academy. That year, Netniyom received the presidential saber from then President Ferdinand E. Marcos. His other graduation awards included Mathematics Plaque, Physical Science Plaque, and Engineering Sciences Plaque. Navy Lt. Alvin R. Lopez, PMA chief information officer and spokesman, said Netniyom was also one of the "Starmen" — those in the Superintendent’s Merit List and thus awarded the Distinguished Cadet Award — to graduate from the academy. Starmen are called so because of the five-pointed star they wear on the collar of their cadet full-dress coats. To earn the distinction, a cadet must have a grade point average of at least 9 (93 percent equivalent), and must also be in the upper quartile of the class in both conduct and aptitude for the service. "No cadet in recent years has earned this coveted title," Lopez said. The academy has graduated 19 foreign cadets in the post-war era. Five topped the merit rolls of their respective PMA classes. They are Thaval N. Sawapungka, also of Thailand (1960), Eckwood Harold Solomon Jr. of the United States (1963), Kah Kee Lim of Singapore (1977), Sun Yee Ho, also of Singapore (1978), and Netniyom, (1981). Sawpungka and Solomon were also Starmen. Netniyom is the director of the Office of the External Relations, Directorate of Joint Intelligence, Supreme Headquarters of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. Meanwhile, the Armed Forces tightened security yesterday after finding an explosive device in the PMA, one of the alleged targets in a plot to overthrow and possibly kill the President, military sources said. The device, loaded with five pounds (about two kilograms) of TNT (trinitrouelene), was found late on Saturday hidden in a clutch bag near the parade ground at the PMA, where President Arroyo was meant to attend an annual reunion this weekend. The PMA superintendent declined to confirm the discovery. "We are still investigating," Maligalig told Reuters by telephone. Arroyo, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, skipped the gathering in the mountain resort of Baguio, about 250 kilometers (160 miles) north of Manila, after the coup plot by fugitive mutineers was revealed earlier this week.
