Can anyone say something about its design? or Can anyone make some suggestion to its improvement?

Originally supposed to be a class of 6 or 7 units and act as squadron leaders to the 78 foot gunboats.

Hull was based on the PG100 series gunboats but scaled up (Oppus says that it was based on the Tirad Pass but I beg to differ). So far it is the largest locally built warship built by the Cavite Naval Shipyard.

Originally meant to be armed with 1 Oto Melara 76mm gun forward and 1 40mm or 30mm gun aft. Now carries 2 40mmL60 guns, 2 20mm guns and 4 50 cal mgs. All these guns were taken from reserver PN stocks. The Navy wanted to replace the main gun with a 76mm but I've been told that the plan was shelved.

The class has had a very long gestation period from the launch of each unit to commissioning. Delays were imposed by funding difficulties which led to delays in getting equipment to equip each unit (latest of which is the BRP Juan Luna) since much of the equipment has to be imported (ie radios, radars, auxilliary equipment, etc.). Navy officials have said that building the hull was the easy part. The difficult part was in equipping the ships with everything they need - this has been borne out by the length of time it has taken to commission each unit. They have also said that we can build larger ships but equipping them would be a problem.

One major room for improvement would be more powerful engines and improved ship systems. The boats are underpowered and "overcrewed" but IMHO, for all its faults it was a good start that we should have continued to improve upon the design until we got it right. At the rate we are going however, the original shipwrights who built the first boat will be long retired and any experience we may have gotten in building the first units will have been lost. I've been told that there is at least one more incomplete unit in the shipyard. Whether any work has been done on it is an open question.

Sayang, ang ganda pa naman ng nasimulan nila. How about dream engine or armaments for this ship?

Hi there, I also read somewhere that the hull of the Emilio Aguinaldo and the Antonio Luna is based on the Tirad Pass. I think it was a Jane's publication. Jus t sharing.

:agree: Manokski.

It is really hard for PN to put the necessary equipment to this vessel. All the Defense agency needs it own precious budget right now. To think that those equipments are imported it is really a big blow to PN annual budget.

Giving this ship a new and better engine will be a good concept. plus new weaponry and its system.

Thanks. In either case, it was a good idea. I wish the PN could pursue it further. It may turn out to be more expensive in the long run but we have to start somewhere.

Yes, that class of boats was an interesting effort.

Remember who were involved? Was it an internal PN project? Were local shipbuilding companies involved? Development and acquisition costs? Who were responsible for the design? It's been called "underpowered" and "overcrewed", was it because of setting the wrong specs from the onset, or were they forced to cut corners because of budget considerations?

The idea of locally developing defense products crops up every so often and here was a real effort at that. Maybe some discussion pertaining to its development could shed light on things that went right, went wrong.

So there's a 3rd hull? the navy should contniue the effort perhaps this time a more potent aguinaldo class warship will be realized by the lessons they have learned from the earlier two prototypes...
