Philippines, Taiwan to cooperate on sea border policing

First posted 02:42pm (Mla time) April 24, 2006
Agence France-Presse

TAIWAN and the Philippines have agreed to step up sea border security cooperation after an alleged Taiwanese poacher was shot dead earlier this year, Filipino officials said Monday.

National police Chief Arturo Lomibao flew to Taipei last week and met with his Taiwanese counterparts to discuss border issues after a violent confrontation between his men and the crew of a Taiwan-flagged fishing boat off the northern Philippines.

"My trip to Taiwan was on the invitation of the representative of the Taiwan [cultural office]," Lomibao told the Foreign Correspondents Association.

The talks covered the shooting incident and the possibility of "our sharing information in the campaign against drugs," Lomibao said.

Marcelo Ele, head of a police task force against drug smuggling, said the incident with the alleged smuggler happened when his fishing vessel tried to ram a Filipino police boat that was attempting to drive it away from a protected area.

He said the clash, in which the Taiwanese skipper was killed, showed how poaching and the smuggling of drugs and migrants were getting out of hand in the Philippines-Taiwan sea border.

The issue is complicated by the absence of formal diplomatic ties between the neighbors. Manila only recognizes Beijing.

Ele said that the countries now wanted such activities "minimized or put to a stop before it grows into unimaginable proportions."

Praise the lord alelujah! Finally have some Filipino left in the Philippines who have big balls to shoot any foreign vessels that inter it's border illegally. They can cry all they want tell them bring it on, hell we might just split that small island half with China. Common people! don't be scared to shoot when you have good excuse like that. They are lucky that you guys politicians and Generals are to corrupt to buy you guys anti-ship missile or else that ship will be history under the sea. :armycheers:

That's a good move.

That northern part of the country was notorious for smuggling and illgeal fishing activities.

Some locals even said that the govt units (Navy or Coast Guard) guarding the seas there were in cahoots with these criminals.

The Navy and the Coast Guard and even the PNP Maritime Group should know these things that burden our poor people in the north. They must do their job well in eradicating these poaching and smuggling activities.

The waters down south should be guarded closely as well.
