PKMs, Andradas and even Cyclones are not enough to rebel poachers, smugglers, pirates and illegal immigrants. :nono:

what the Philippine Navy needs is to field a credible number of OFFSHORE PATROL VESSELS, with each vessel being equipped with an aft landing deck and hangar for a multi-purpose naval helicopter (even an upgraded AB-212ASW or Bo.105C will work wonders for the Navy) and a RHIB.

OPVs will not only help raise the Philippine flag and exercise the country's sovereignty on various places that are within the jurisdiction of the Philippines but will also help interdict poachers, smugglers, pirates and illegal immigrants where they operate the most- AT HIGH SEAS. :fire:

:agree: :exactly:

Those choppers will give the poachers a hard time escaping, ....if they can even dare escape.

You're right about that.

Also, let's start building our own OPVs. We've got world-class shipbuilding facilities already.

Phase 1 Modernization includes the OPV acquisition. Am i right? Any news on this matter?

By the way, all we need is a better ship for the navy. Private must see the needs of the financing the PN project

we cannot PROVE they were armed.... because our navy has no video or pictures of the incident... since we cannot PROVE it, we cannot JUSTIFY our navy shooting up their ship and killing one of their countrymen.... if it happened to one of our ships, and they couldn't produce any evidence on why they shot at our fishermen, we would also be raising all kinds of hell... diba?

gentlemen, lets not be hypocrites....

i put the blame squarely on the navy....

OUR SHIPS DONT HAVE CAMERAS OR CAMCORDERS BECAUSE THE NAVY DOES NOT THINK THAT THESE RECORDING EQUIPMENT ARE REQUIREMENTS

dont tell me because we do not have the budget to equip our intercepting ships with cheap camcorders or even simple instamatic cameras..... the reason is plain KATANGAHAN...

i think nahahawa na navy natin sa katangahan ng army.....

That vessel looks more like a Fast Attack Patrol Boat without flags and insignia...Its impossible for a just simple pirates to acquire such boat...

pirates are wealthier than you think... specially those operating in southeast asian waters.....

Let us not judge first the actions of the Phil. Navy with regards to the shooting coz we haven't heard their side yet...

But one thing for sure, that Taiwanese Fishing boat is poaching within the Philippines Territorial Waters and that is a Crime. Also this shouldn't have happened if they didn't enter our Waters.

Remember, one chinese Fishing boat went fishing within Batangas and they were allowed to leave unscathed because they didn't resist our Authorities. I saw one Peacock PS38 anchored near the rear of that Chinese vessel while Navy Frogmen were inspecting the vessel's hull.

It just prove na hindi tayo ganun ka-TANGA ... :fire:

Wushu is right, we shouldn't be too fast on praising the PN as if it was the right thing. We still don't know, however, what really happened as we all weren't there. Let's wait until official reports come out.

Philippines, Taiwan to cooperate on sea border policing

First posted 02:42pm (Mla time) April 24, 2006
Agence France-Presse

TAIWAN and the Philippines have agreed to step up sea border security cooperation after an alleged Taiwanese poacher was shot dead earlier this year, Filipino officials said Monday.

National police Chief Arturo Lomibao flew to Taipei last week and met with his Taiwanese counterparts to discuss border issues after a violent confrontation between his men and the crew of a Taiwan-flagged fishing boat off the northern Philippines.

"My trip to Taiwan was on the invitation of the representative of the Taiwan [cultural office]," Lomibao told the Foreign Correspondents Association.

The talks covered the shooting incident and the possibility of "our sharing information in the campaign against drugs," Lomibao said.

Marcelo Ele, head of a police task force against drug smuggling, said the incident with the alleged smuggler happened when his fishing vessel tried to ram a Filipino police boat that was attempting to drive it away from a protected area.

He said the clash, in which the Taiwanese skipper was killed, showed how poaching and the smuggling of drugs and migrants were getting out of hand in the Philippines-Taiwan sea border.

The issue is complicated by the absence of formal diplomatic ties between the neighbors. Manila only recognizes Beijing.

Ele said that the countries now wanted such activities "minimized or put to a stop before it grows into unimaginable proportions."
