Malaysian Navy arrives for counter terrorism exercises By Roel Pareño The Philippine Star 12/06/2005 ZAMBOANGA CITY — Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel arrived here yesterday to stage joint counter-terrorism exercises with the Philippine Navy to prevent terrorists from utilizing the waters in southern Philippines for their activities. The exercise, dubbed as Maritime Exercises (MAREX 03-05), will be held as the US government started to freeze the assets of the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group. The 40 RMN personnel aboard two Malaysian Naval patrol gunboats arrived at the Majini Pier of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) for the weeklong joint exercises that will culminate in the sea waters of Malaysia. They were accorded with arrival honors by Navy Capt. Roberto Santos, chief of Task Force 61. "The MAREX aims to enhance the capability of both naval forces of the two countries in the war against terrorism," Commodore Rufino Lopez Jr., NFWM chief said. The Philippine Navy will also deploy about the same number of personnel to complement the Malaysian forces. The PN and the RMN are to sign today a joint statement signaling the kick off ceremony of the maritime exercises. http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200512069903.htm 2 Gunboats?!! PH-Malaysian naval exercises set next week THE Philippine Navy will hold military exercises with its counterpart from Malaysia, a fellow claimant of the disputed Spratly Islands or the Kalayaan Island Group west of Palawan. Navy spokesman Capt. Giovanni Carlo Bacordo said the 10-day exercises, dubbed MALPHI-LAUT 14-11, will begin on March 16 and will be capped with live fire exercises east of Palawan. Bacordo said the two-part exercise will consist of a five-day harbor phase which would include the arrival of the Royal Malaysian Navy ships, the opening ceremony, staff training and indoor discussions and briefings at Puerto Princesa, home of the military’s Western Command; and another five-day sea phase to be held at the Sulu Sea east of Palawan. The second phase would include ship maneuvers, boarding and seizure training, maritime interdiction operations, replenishment of provisions at sea, gun-firing exercises, and navigational and communication exercises. Bacordo said a third part would be the post-exercise phase from March 24 to March 26 which would include sports competition among the participants, and post training activities like debriefing and report writing, and socials. Bacordo said the Navy will use two Navy ships, an Islander plane, and a team from the Navy’s elite force Special Operations Group for the exercises while the Malaysians will be bringing in three fast attack craft and a team of Pascal, the counterpart of the Navy’s SOG. http://www.malaya.com.ph/mar10/news9.html |

Military exercises strengthens RP-Malaysian relations-NFW ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Mar 31 (PIA) –- The ten-day military exercises between the Philippine Navy and the Royal Malaysian Navy, which concluded March 25, has been beneficial to both parties and was a success in its purpose, the Naval Forces West (NFW) claimed. The activity opened on March 16. The 6th Civil Relations Group of the AFP said in a statement that the military exercise, conducted annually with the Philippines and Malaysia alternately hosting the activity, aimed to “strengthen the relationship and enhance the mutual cooperation between the Philippine Navy and the Malaysian Navy through the development of combined operational doctrine, practices and naval tactics.” Dubbed MALPHI-LAUT 14-11 and conducted as a two-part activity, the first five days, called the harbor phase, included the arrival of the Royal Malaysian Navy ships, the opening ceremony, staff training and indoor discussions and briefings. The second part, called the sea phase, included ship maneuvers, boarding and seizure training, maritime interdiction operations, replenishment of provisions at sea, gun firing exercises and navigational and communication exercise. Two navy ships and an Islander plane were used by the Philippine Navy and a team from its elite force, the Special Operations Group, participated in the exercise. Its Malaysian counterpart, on the other hand, brought in three fast attack craft and a team of its own elite force, the Pascal. Another ship was provided by the Philippine Navy which served as the “contact of interest” of both parties. “The military exercises held between the naval forces of the Philippines and Malaysia provided a big boost in our naval capability building and skills enhancement. We assure the people that the knowledge and abilities our men gained in the ten-day exercise will be employed to the optimum in carrying out their duties as protectors of our waters and maritime resources,” Western Command (WESCOM) Chief LtGen Juancho M. Sabban said. It was also the second time the MALPHI-LAUT was held in Palawan: the first one was held in 1999. A sports competition between the participants was also held as part of the post-exercise phase. Malaysia is also a claimant of the disputed Spratly Archipelago, a chain of potentially oil- and mineral-rich islands and islets. Others who claim the Spratly Islands, in whole or in part, are China, Taiwan, Brunei and Vietnam. (NBE/6CRGAFP/RVCarbayas-PIA9 BaSulTa) http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=25244 |
