Belgian AIFVs up for sale soon
November 18, 2005, 11:17:44 pm

Belgium ordered 500+ AIFVs in the 1970s, but will now replace them with wheeled vehicles, with a contract for the replacement coming out in the next few months. This means surplus AIFVs will soon be up for sale.

Better get the red tape rolling this early if you want some of these.

----------

this is what defense-aerospace.com is saying about the fate of the Belgian AIFVs:

3. Armored Infantry Vehicle (AIF)

A significant project that was discussed is the launch of a formal procedure for the acquisition of armored infantry vehicles (AIV).

AIVs are at the core of the transformation of our land forces, and in by far the most expensive investment program of this Parliament. This program is valued at about 800 million, euros, for 242 vehicles in 7 separate versions. Some will be fitted with a heavy cannon (no caliber has yet been determined), others with a 30mm cannon. In addition, other versions will be configured for troop transport, combat engineer, commando, ambulance and logistic support missions.

Three batches are planned: an initial firm batch of 138 vehicles, with two conditional batches of 81 and 23 AIVs respectively. These vehicles will definitively replace tracked vehicles (Leopard tanks, and AIFV and M-113 infantry vehicles).

Several suppliers are being considered, including Mowag (Switzerland), Steyr (Austria), GIAT (France), IVECO (Italy) and Patria (Finland.)

The economic benefits deriving from this program are substantial, and could attain several hundreds of millions of euros.

A contract will probably be awarded by the end of 2005-beginning of 2006.

- the Philippine Army should get its hands on these soon-to-be surplus Belgian AIFVs and M113s before some other country (just like when the Philippines missed out on the surplus Dutch AIFVs, of which 500+ were sold to Egypt) gets them! :headbang:

i hope we could get more updates regarding the impending retirement (and, possibly, sale) of the Belgian AIFVs and M113s. :thumb:
