^ but still, the Spike is not enough to even intimidate the Chinese or any other potential naval aggressor. what the PN needs is to actually field significant number of ship- and air-launched anti-ship missiles such as the Harpoon, MM40 Exocet, Otomat, Penguin, Sea Skua and Gabriel, and ship-launched air defense missiles such as the Sea Sparrow, Aspide, Barak and Mistral. like what i said earlier, it is good to have Spikes mounted on our small patrol boats that what we need are vessels with "credible" anti-surface, air defense and anti-submarine warfare capabilities to pose as deterrents from potential aggression from sea and air; maritime patrol aircraft and multi-role naval helicopters with anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare capabilities; and land-based naval monitoring radars.

Umm. My opinion states that unless we have once again the skills to maintain and afford training with better missles the Spikes that we currently have are adequate for now. It is a point defense weapon but effective nonetheless. What we need next is to restart our missile program and mate a good copy of the Spike's fire and forget seeker to it. Considering how much those foreign made anti-ship missiles cost, a fraction of it is enough to restart the missile program. The rest of the sum can be used to produce missiles of our own. Then, with the current Spikes we have dissect their guidance system and mate it to our then longer ranged fire and forget intermediate defense missile system that can be mounted on some of our larger vessels. Thus, we keep uniformity and save overall. Once we save a bit more in producing this kind of missile, we invest next on the said foreign made anti-ship missiles and do this again. Yet, even as we develop our own copies of better anti-ship missiles, our naval vessels are already able to leave port all capable of firing a much more capable local version of the Spike missile. Plus, considering that only a small time is required to train one to use it properly that period in port is made very much useful. This way, we keep much of our cash to benefit us instead of just a few high and mighty officials and their foreign compadres. |

Command is about authority, about appointment to a position. Effective leadership is different. It must be learned and practiced in order for it to rise to the level of art. You must love those you lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment but you cannot lead without it; and without leadership, command is a hollow experience. .. a vacuum often filled with mistrust and ignorance. One idea to improve the capability of our point defense Spikes is to mate it with a rocket case with longer range capability and a larger warhead. As we currently lack the funds for sophisticated electronics and counter- and counter-countermeasures we invest then on relays. We have UAVs and let's design submersible types of such too for our navy (if the Koreans could make one so could we). With these UAVs and such fielding ahead of our naval ships they could not only be our eyes and ears but equally send the fix to our fire-and-forget Spikes. Less cost and better use of resources at this stage for us. With the lessons and experience we have in building better Spikes we could more easily do a similar project on the next missile we'll purchase (or make considering we have a shelved missile project). |
