Navy activates detachment in Sarangani to fight terrorism, smuggling

GLAN, Sarangani ~ The Philippine Navy (PN) has set up Friday a naval detachment here to fight terrorism and catch illegal fishermen, pirates and illegal entrants.

"Maritime economy is very strong here. So we want to secure the area," said Rear Admiral George Uy, PN chief of naval staff.

"With the presence of the Navy we would address piracy, illegal fishing, terrorism and illegal entrants. We will be guarding Sarangani Island and Balut Island more often this time," Uy said in an address during ceremonies at Glan port.

Sarangani and Balut islands comprise Davao del Sur province's municipality of Sarangani across Glan, about four hours by boat to Indonesia.

Uy said Governor Migs Dominguez and Glan Mayor Enrique Yap Jr. assisted the Navy to strengthen security at ports.

A part of the naval forces in eastern Mindanao based in Davao City, the Glan detachment would also watch over maritime vessels passing to and from Makar Wharf in nearby General Santos City.

Uy disclosed that the naval detachment was set up in Glan because "Sarangani Bay is very strategic."

"In this part of Mindanao, the Glan detachment now serves as a base of a potent team of naval experts, definitely a force to reckon with. On this day onward, this naval detachment now houses a team of highly competent sailors to set off a series of naval operations," Uy said.

The naval detachment backs up the naval "coast watch station" at Tinaka Point, also in Glan, and "floating assets deployed thereat", according to Commodore Rogelio Calunsag, commander of naval forces in Eastern Mindanao. (Bong Reblando)

Pretty tough statement. What could compose a naval detachment, SWAG and Marines?

:salute:

That's what i want to hear from our Navy. :thumb:

They should be proactive and know their responsibility well.

HELP PROTECTING THE FLOW AND GROWTH OF COMMERCE BY PROVIDING SECURITY SHOULD ALWAYS BE CONSIDERED A VITAL PART OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.

Mabuhay po kayo! :thumb:

Kung ganyan ba ang pag-iisip ng Navy natin, di maglalaon yung dating imahe na kurakot kayo sa mga mangingisda ay magiging kakampi nila kayo.

:agree:

Showing the willingness to serve the people is a good sign that the philippine navy.

Protecting the Backdoor of our country is one problem that is emerging in our fight against the terrorism and piracy. Now that they have established a naval detachment again in that area now we can control and protect the people that are trading the area of davao, saranggani and near by islands.

Navy opens detachment in Sarangani port
MindaNews / 5 November 2005

GLAN, Sarangani -- Protecting the area’s “strong maritime economy” from illegal fishermen, pirates and illegal entrants is reportedly the reason why the Philippine Navy has activated a naval detachment here Friday.

“With the presence of the Navy we would address piracy, illegal fishing, terrorism and illegal entrants,” Rear Admiral George Uy, chief of naval staff, said during the activation ceremonies at Glan port.

“We will be guarding Sarangani Island and Balut Island more often this time,” he said, adding

Sarangani and Balut islands comprise Davao del Sur province’s municipality of Sarangani across Glan, about four hours by boat to Indonesia.

Uy added that the naval detachment was set up in Glan because “Sarangani Bay is very strategic.”

“In this part of Mindanao, the Glan naval detachment now serves as a base of a potent team of naval experts, definitely a force to reckon with. On this day onward, this naval detachment now houses a team of highly competent sailors to set off a series of naval operations,” he stressed.

The Navy official said Governor Migs Dominguez and Glan Mayor Enrique Yap Jr. assisted the Navy to “strengthen ports in places where it is needed.”

The Glan detachment, which is part of the naval forces in eastern Mindanao based in Davao City, would also watch over maritime vessels passing to and from Makar Wharf in nearby General Santos City.

The naval detachment backs up the naval “coast watch station” at Tinaka Point, also in Glan, and “floating assets deployed thereat”, according to Commodore Rogelio Calunsag, commander of naval forces in Eastern Mindanao.

In June, a modern naval facility opened at Tinaka Point in Barangay Batulaki for a 24-hour watch over major sea routes in Sarangani and General Santos City. The P5-million Naval Intelligence Security Force Building has a modern radar system and two stand-by generators. It is manned by Navy personnel and guarded by the Marines.

Calunsag said the Glan naval detachment can provide “quick reaction capability.”

“A team of naval special watch personnel will be deployed in the area together with their special equipment,” he said.

Uy said the detachment would have a “special operation personnel” and Navy ships.

He said the Navy was establishing a strong presence here to bolster the atmosphere of peace and economic security

Sarangani and the rest of the region “now stands on the promise of even more well-guarded waters to reinforce the protection of Mindanao’s peace, security and huge economic potentials,” he said.

Anyone who comes to a counter-insurgency thinking it`s about killing terrorists is missing the boat. It`s really about winning the people. You can kill all the terrorists but then you`ve pissed people off and created 100 more.
