I just heard the news from TV Patrol F5s being garaged and replaced by 5 S211s Such a sad sad day for our flyboys. What I don't get is why the heck do they have to have that lady reporter flew with the air force official on a 2 seater S211 when they are on a tight budget?? they said that the S211 cost about PHP35,000/hour to fly. |

I can see that too. But now that we dont have the funds needed to maintain them, aside from their age, it is best that we junk them now to support our other assets that we are currently using to address our COIN ops. I believe this setup will last for 7 to 10 years. Let's just wish that no Mischief Reef takeover happens again. Our Navy should work harder in ensuring our interests in the Spratly's and the shoal off the shores of Subic. It's about time the AFP or Pres. Gloria do her best to at least get 7 surplas "JAS39" to make us feel secured and ready. I hope that delivery comes in a few years. I HOPE! |

I've just read the Inquirer's take on this story. It said that the reason why the DND decided to divert P100 Mil for maintaining rhose F5s to buy a more Vietnam War-Vintage Hueys is that they see no external conventional threat to our National Security. Therefore priority is given to fighting the NPA, MILF, Abu Sayyaf and JI. Well even though that "external threat" is now building us a railroad from Manila to Clark and it seems happy to just flood our markets with cheap substandard products, and to jack up oil prices with its insatiable demand for crude, mabuti na ang nag-iingat. That thing about "having no external threat" was the same thing some European Defense Ministers said in the years between WWI and WWII. Look what happened to them when Hitler came marching into their countries. I am sure the Army wouldn't mind if we buy a handful of SLEPed A4 Skyhawks. They may not be fighter jets but they can guarantee express bomb, rocket and 20MM bullet delivery faster than Shakeys or Pizza Hut and can dogfight with MiGs if necessary. After all, Death From Above gives the Army its edge. |

It is almost funny how they say that the F5's are being "replaced" by the S211's, which by any stretch of the imagination is not a fighter plane. The S211's are trainers that do not have any provisions for air to air weaponry. What are they going to say a few years from now when the 5 flyable S211's are not flying anymore? That the country's air defense rquirements are being filled by SF260's ? OV10's? It is just sad how the PAF went from one of the best equipped air force in southeast asia, sending missions to the congo, blue diamonds showcasing the PAF pillots skill, to "defending" the Philippine skies with a grand total of 5 S211 trainers.. |

Israeli is definitely right, the Air Force is not about to replace the recently retired F5's with F5's. But with nothing we have at present, I think the 100 dollar F5 deal is a good one, for like I said a stop gap measure. its a sad day today!!!!! Im wearing black.

A sad day indeed. And they're not disclosing the real reason too as to why the F5s are now decommissioned. |

Command is about authority, about appointment to a position. Effective leadership is different. It must be learned and practiced in order for it to rise to the level of art. You must love those you lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment but you cannot lead without it; and without leadership, command is a hollow experience. .. a vacuum often filled with mistrust and ignorance. I don't believe for a moment that it's expensive for the government to maintain and even upgrade these old warriors. If they can afford to waste money on useless items like the Venable deal they can very well afford to keep these warhorses in fighting trim. |

taken from INQ7.net: Air Force decommissions its 40-year-old fighter jets First posted 10:55pm (Mla time) Oct 01, 2005 By Agence France-Presse FLORIDABLANCA-- (UPDATE) The Philippine Air Force on Saturday decommissioned its 40-year-old F5 jets that formed the core of the country's air defense and also saw action against communist and Muslim rebels and military mutineers. A lone F-5 jet, piloted by Brigadier General Manuel Natividad, the commander of the air defense wing, taxied into its hangar in Basa airbase north of Manila to symbolize the end of the service. The air force said the last 10 remaining fighter-bombers were too old and too expensive to maintain in view of the shift in military resources to tackling internal defense rather than external threats. The first 23 brand new jets were acquired in 1965 from the United States under a bilateral military assistance pact, making the Philippines the first Southeast Asian country to have supersonic fighters. Since then the jets have been used extensively to patrol areas claimed by the Philippines in the disputed Spratly Islands chain and the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. The jets were used to back soldiers fighting communist insurgents in the central and northern Philippines and Muslim separatist rebels and the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group in the south. They blasted military rebel positions at an airbase south of Manila during a coup attempt in 1989. The whole F5 fleet has been grounded since May 2001 following a crash of one of the jets during a joint military exercise with the U.S. military. The subsonic Augusta AS-211 jet trainer and light attack aircraft will temporarily perform external defense duties, the air force said. Captain Ephraim G. Suyom, spokesman for the Air Defense Wing at Basa Air Base in northern Pampanga province said five of the remaining 10 F5s were still "serviceable" but all of them could be used "in case of war." "In extreme emergency, you do what you have to do," he said. The acquisition of the F-5 jets in 1965 made the Philippines the first country in the region to operate supersonic fighters but due to a lack of money, the country now has one of the most primitive armed forces in the region. I'd better wear black too. We should have done that when our Crusaders were grounded too. Might as well stop the PLAAF Su-27s with SF260s! |
