:armycry:  The F5 had served the PAF so well serving from the last months of Cong Dadong's term up until the administration of his own daughter, Gloria.  It served not only to keep China, our neighbors and even the Soviets off our yard but fought so that our Republic may survive. Aside from recon and strike missions against Rebels, its finest hour was on the Dec 3, 1989 when Democracy was on the brink of being stomped by a Military Junta. A flight of F5s led by Maj. Danilo Atienza turned the tide for Government forces when it took away from the RAM SFP YOU the ability to reign terror from the sky by blasting their Tora Toras at the cost of Atienza's life.

I once read that the F5's responded to a call against an NPA attack on a military radar or communication station. It made a strafing run that made the rebels to scamper and withdrew.

Anybody knew about this incident or confirm it?

Another F-5 story:

I am not sure if it's this one.

It happened during the term of Cory Aquino. This was the time when the reds were at their strongest.

You would hear news about "another municipal hall has been attacked" almost every week.

The radar site involved was the 580th based in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte. The radar site is situated on top of a mountain. The mountain is visible in the vicinity where i grew up. I've been in that radar site once. My uncle used to work for a mining firm operating near that area as a truck driver.

I wasnt fortunate enough to witness the event though. I was in school that time.

My friends told me that the F5s would dive and unleash rockets to drive away the rebels who were trying to crawl up the hill. The jet would then climb up so fast, maybe to evade the enemy fire.

The folks there even said that "parang baby rocket na nagbabaga yung rocket eh". You can visualize how the scene would look like from that simple narration.

Come to think of it, since they were about 7 kilometers away from the scene, the event might have occured late in the afternoon since the glowing trail of the rockets could still be seen that far.

Some folks even said that the AFP decided not to make the base appear as if it is so well-maintained so that the rebels wouldnt bother attacking it.

I believe another attempt was done after that, but only choppers were sent to drive the rebels away.

That was the old perception.

Now, i understand why it has remained poorly maintained up to this time.

:exactly:

NO JETS TO FLY TO KEEP US SAFE!

NOT EVEN RADARS TO KNOW WHEN THESE JETS NEED TO FLY TO KEEP US SAFE!

I wonder what will be my next line fitting the two above? :wow:

After that happens, the PAF no longer deserves its name. Until it regains the capability to defend our skies it shall be called the Philippine Army Air Corps. It has become nothing more than a taxi service and bomb delivery boy for the Army and the Marines no thanks to an insurgency that cannot seem to be contained.

The Philippine F-5 was costing a maintainance P100 million per yer. And the decommissioning of the 10 F-5 this morning in basa air base are attended also of the counter part official of the United States Government, former pilots that are flying this Air craft for 40 years and the PAF officials. If we can recall that F-5 are obtained by our country thru Joint Defense Agreement between the Philippine and United States Government. The funds that can be save by the PAF in the maintainance will be diverted in the reapir of the other S-211 sub-sonic jet and other purposes that need immediate funding. For now there are 5 sub-sonic jet that are flyable. They are hoping that this aircraft will feel up the hole in the absent of the supersonic jet.

hope this makes sense to you guys but the f-5 and its high price counterpart, the F-104, represented the last of a breed. the easy, cheap, unsophisticated level of maintenance. that is, until they started putting bells and whistles on them. note that the f-8s did not survive long and currently, the paf is sticking to this level of unsophistication, be it on flying or ground assets. put simply, the paf, the way i see it, might not have the technical knowledge base (or for that matter, the dicipline) to maintain assets to specs. if you look at our neighbors, there was a gradual increase in maintenance and operational capability. sad to say, but for me, the paf is, right now, being represented by its last air to air missile, the -9b. the last level of technical expertise achieved...
