Why Did We Give Up The Barnegats?

I was wondering why we gave up the Barnegat-class WHECS which were employed by the PN as frigates, instead of the Admirable-class minesweeper turned corvettes?

These ships, the Barnegats, have good sea-keeping qualities being weather high-endurance cutters. They should be of good use in the Spratlys which have rough seas. These can be better armed with larger-caliber weapons and may be more suitable to carry missiles.

once upon a time, the Philippine Navy had Barnegat class frigates. they are:

- BRP Andres Bonifacio (ex-USS Chincoteague)
- BRP Diego Silang (ex-USS Bering Strait)
- BRP Francisco Dagohoy (ex-USS Castle Rock)
- BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (ex-USS Wachapreague)
- the ex-USS Yakutat, which was used as a spares source for the other Barnegats
- the ex-USS Cook Inlet, which was also used as a spares source

these Barnegat class frigates were actually part of the South Vietnamese Navy until they escaped to the Philippines and their custody eventually taken over by the Philippines.

i'm wondering how the PN looked like before having four Barnegat class frigates, three Cannon class frigates and two Auk class corvettes. damn! perhaps those were the good old days of the Philippine Navy. :headbang: :drunk:

p.s.: oh, Vietnam still has one Barnegat class frigate in service, the Pham Ngu Lao. it is armed with three 37 mm guns, two dual 25 mm guns, two SA-N-5 SAM positions and two 81 mm mortars.

Does are the glory days of the Philippine Navy. How much was the operational cost of this vessels annualy? Its worth considering if we have those ship right now. even if it is old but we babdly need them.

Lets wait for the 2006 budget to be approve. It contain a deal for modernization in the AFP the budget was higher than the previously allocated.i hoping that the 2005 budget appropriation will not be enacted again. its a big blow to the modernization

Same as the year before, P40 Billion.

And the conversion rate then is different from the present. The buying capacity of that P40 billion shrunk how many times? :sad2:

The Budget maybe the affected of the VENABLE LLP contract. In a chance question and answer in an occassion that the guest of honor was Sec. Tiglao, a student ask him about the VENABLE LLP issue. He said that "Venable contract was all about financial project and hardware transfer suppose to be in the philippine government. It should not be discussed into public because it is a classified deal."

40 billion may shrink down to 35 billion a if the D**n Senator and Congressman are so "D**k headed" in the military modernization. If only AFP will order to shot 5-8 senators and 15-18 congressman right now i will volunteer.
