Indonesia holds Croatia ship crew

Armed Indonesian troops have boarded a Croatian cargo ship and arrested its 25-man crew, reportedly at gunpoint.

The MV Mirna Rijeka has been docked in the port of Surabaya since a dispute with Indonesia began a year ago.

The Indonesian authorities have accused the Mirna Rijeka of illicit logging, but the Croatian embassy in Jakarta said the latest action was illegal.

Ambassador Alexander Broz defended the ship's captain, insisting the vessel should have been free to sail in May.

Troops boarded the ship, and reportedly arrested the captain at gunpoint after the breakdown of negotiations over allowing the ship to leave Indonesian waters.

Mr Broz said the captain was asked to sign documents written in Indonesian, but refused because his lawyer was not present.

Logs stored in the ship's hold were also seized by the Indonesian authorities.

Court ruling

"This ship was free to sail on 6 May," Mr Broz said.

"From my standpoint, everything that has happened since that point is illegal, including the seizure, even if that was done by court order."

An Indonesian official, Yusuf Malik, said just 10 troops boarded the ship to enforce a court order accusing the ship of being involved in illegal logging.

Mr Broz maintained that 200 troops were involved in the operation.

The ship, which is privately owned and sails under the Croatian flag, has been moored in Surabaya since it was accused of having improper travel documents in August 2004.

It was intercepted in the Arafuru Sea in eastern Indonesia while carrying 15,000 cubic metres of logs.

The East Java High Court ruled in favour of allowing the ship to leave Indonesian waters in May.

Agoes Salim Dunda, representing the ship's owners, told the Associated Press news agency that Indonesia should respect the court's decision to allow the ship to leave.

"Our crew knows nothing about illegal logging. Prosecutors should investigate the company that is involved in the felling of the trees, not us."

Shipboarding is now being practiced by almost all gov't. Even at CARAT, it is one of the trainings being taught. Ask seafarers boarding international vessels, most of them experienced boarding by navy and coast guard personnel. Part of the new IMO regulations, the ISPS Code. Let's say, it's an off-shoot of the global war against terror., suppossedly :armyeek:

Sad, "hulidap". Been happening before there at the Malacca Straits and South China Seas. Reports of ships being boarded or stopped by patrol boats and end up missing with its precious cargoes. But hopefully with the new ISPS code, ships will be equipped with AIS and other devices that would alert governmental agencies via satellite and provide much needed assistance.
