i'm still wondering about the basis of "the Muslims might hate the Philippines for buying Kfirs and other Israeli-made stuff" argument. come on, even these Muslims buy weapons from Israel (examples are Indonesia buying surplus A-4 Skyhawks and the Turkish military having deals with Israel). :dontgetit:

the point is NO country (not even the United States of America) should dictate the Philippines on what weapons and equipment it must get in order to equip the AFP. :demon:

in any event, there are other reasons why civilian and political leaders refuse to arm and modernize the afp. the president is afraid the afp might turn its firepower on her government. its a fear primal even during fvr's term

Many influential sectors love to hate the Military because they were traumatized by the Martial Law years especially the excesses the AFP have allegedly committed during that era. But an ill-equipped military does not entail that it will become a security threat with its talons filed off.

Maltreating the military makes it a more dangerous threat. They government persists on equipping them with substandard armaments bought with a kickback on the side. They deny them vital medical supplies and medevac choppers because of lack of funds due to an "reenacted budget". They use Military spies in their political games like allegedly wiretapping a certain conversation. They favor certain officers because of political debts they owe them. If the AFP is subjected further to such excesses I wouldn't be surprised if a group of restive junior officers meet under the AFPCIG's nose and mobilize their men to launch a coup.

A well-equipped AFP doesn't mean it's a threat. What it needs is a steady succession of impeccably professional leaders who abhor politics and have the balls to execute corrupt officers even if it's their own mistahs.

I stand corrected. I guess my mindset was still at a time when the entire Arab world wanted to stamp out the jewish state. :salute:

The reason why the US persists in gearing the AFP as a Counterinsurgency Police Force because they're using us as its proxy in the region for the War on Terror. They see us as the frontlines in the SEA Theater of Operations in this war since we have Al Qaeda-related groups seeking shelter here. That is why they find it top priority to give Military Aid to those directly involved- the Army and the Marines.

To quote Sen. Enrile in a Time Magazine Article by Anthony Spaeth, "For internal security, you don't need much...All you need is to give them assault rifles, ammo, transport plus counterinsurgency airpower. You don't need fighter planes, just helicopter gunships and good communications."

In fighting the ASG and the NPA, the Army and the Marines can have late-model M16A4s and M4s, SS108 ammo, Raettel APCs, upgraded Hueys plus a few more MG 520s. It will also help if we bought the PAF a few A4s to pound rebel positions using advanced targetting systems and or SU30mks and reliable maritme patrol planes to patrol our sea lanes and to intercept hijacked Kamikaze airliners. The Navy could also use more well-armed high speed Patrol craft with better range to make sure Tangos don't sneak into our EEZ.

i read from a FHM mag that has an interview about a PAF fighter pilot, he said that he and other pilots favored the JAS-39 gripen, i forgot about the date of issue thou :thumb:

Jas-39 Gripen is getting famous. :specool:

I'm wonderin what makes the mythical GRIPEN more appealing than other 4th generation Multi Role Combat Aircraft. Peace to all. :armycheers:

should foreign governments dictate our defense policies

NO! NO! NO! Other country must not interfere.
We should only get IDEA or Help from other country for the purpose of improving our defense capabilities, but Philippine defense requirement and acquisition belongs to the decision of Filipinos.

Philippines must be fully independent on choosing what kind of defense system/requirements it needs in order to equip the Armed Forces.

We must manage to be free from any dictation or dependence from other country.,when it comes to defense decision or policies. Peace to all.

The allure of the Gripen lies in its performance and handling. It also has excellent multi-role capability like its predecessor, the Viggen. It can carry a wide suite of equipment from AMRAAMs to airfield-nerfing submunitions and from mavericks to camera pods. If I am not mistaken, it also inherits the ability of the Viggen and the Draken to operate from sections of highway. It's reasonably-priced with good value fr money

There are also no political strings attached if you buy from Sweden, a neutral country. If you buy F16s or F/A18s it gives the impression you're sucking up to the US. If you buy MiG29s or SU30MKs it is perceived that you are getting chummy with Russia. If you buy Chengdu J9s or Xian J11s it will appear that you are very friendly with China.

If JAS 39s are still too expensive, why not buy Viggens? The Royal Swedish Air Force is phasing them out.
