FOR FIVE hours yesterday, Valenzuela City became the scene of a bank robbery and a bloody gun battle during which three suspects, two bystanders and a policeman were killed.

Twelve suspects were reported arrested after police quickly responded to the robbery.

The suspects, which police said were part of the Waray-Waray criminal group, robbed the Banco de Oro branch on MacArthur Highway at about 9:30 a.m.

Fleeing in two white, heavily tinted Kia Pregio vans, about 15 suspects fled down Maysan Road toward the North Luzon Expressway.

However, witnesses and bank employees immediately called the police, which set up checkpoints along possible escape routes.

Along Paso de Blas in Barangay Canumay West, the suspects encountered a team from the Valenzuela police and opened fire.

PO2 Victor Zabala was hit and killed on the spot. His companions, Insp. Rhoderick Juan and PO1 Fernando Mariano, were wounded.

"They caught us by surprise with their high-powered firearms," Mariano later said.

The robbers peppered the police with bullets, said Director Avelino Razon Jr., director of the National Capital Region Police Office.

Unfazed, the lawmen fought back and held the suspects at bay until reinforcements arrived from the Northern Police District Special Weapons and Tactics team and from the Regional Special Action Force.

The arrival of dozens of policemen forced the suspects to abandon their vehicles. They left behind their loot inside the vans.

Two suspects, including a certain "JR" whom arrested suspects later identified as their leader, were slain in the initial exchange of gunfire.

Trying to escape, some of the suspects ran into the maze of alleys and houses on San Diego Street.

Some of the suspects fled into a warehouse where they took cover behind parked bulldozers and other heavy equipment.

Reporter Doland Castro of ABS-CBN was hit by shrapnel in the leg when a grenade thrown by the suspects exploded as he followed them into an alley.

Another suspect was killed in the ensuing pursuit operation, which after five hours of house to house search led to the arrest of 12 alleged gang members.

Valenzuela City Hall reported that two bystanders - a 59-year-old businesswoman and a jeepney driver - were also killed in the gun battle.

Police identified those arrested as Zaldy Calim, Rey Ediser, Reynaldo Bustamante, Zaldy Mangalindan, Melvin Lacson, Chris Ablas, Jun Mendoza, Bunny Cervilla, Alex Adriano, Ricky Cabatsa, Ronnie Fernandez and Alejandro Candan.

Police seized from the group four M-16 and M-14 rifles, five rifle grenades, handguns, fragmentation grenades, military uniforms and combat boots.

The guns are marked with " Property of the AFP". :grrr:

Ya, some talking heads are yakking about this on TV. The rifles and equipment apparently are the property of the AFP.

Sad.

The AFP and the PNP must have a database monitoring where all guns are located.

The database must be updated evry 6 months and in every turnover of the custody of these weapons.

This will help the AFP and the PNP pinpoint who was the last custodian or holder of that gun before it got into the wrong hands.

WITH THIS, WE CAN FIND OUT WHO AMONG THE AFP OR PNP IS LIKELY CONNIVING WITH CRIMINALS.

The NBI and especially NICA must have access to this database as well.

Why a computerized database?

Digging files in shelves will waste time and putting it right where a click of a button will tell you "where and what" pronto, will tell the difference and points to WHO ARE THE CLOSEST TARGETS FOR INVESTIGATION.
