Ericsson Giraffe AMB Gets Unique 360° Mortar/Rocket Alert and Location Capability (Source: Ericsson Microwave; dated June 14, 2005) Ericsson Microwave Systems AB announces a major breakthrough in expeditionary land and air force defense, adding protection against mortar and rocket attack to its renowned Giraffe AMB surveillance system. Long recognized for its 360° detection of aircraft, missiles, helicopters and sea targets, Giraffe now enters the asymmetric tactical arena, providing camp protection from incoming mortar and rocket attack. Fast antenna rotation (60 rpm) means the incoming object is scanned several times early in its flight, allowing computation of the type of weapon that fired it and a full 3D picture of its trajectory. Lennart Joelsson, vice president, Ericsson Microwave Systems AB, says the system will save lives in the field, offering real protection from sneak attacks. "The 360° Weapon Alert and Location means a Giraffe unit, deployed in either combat or peacekeeping activities, on land or at sea (SEA Giraffe AMB), can detect a very small ballistic target, even in a very cluttered environment, within seconds of launch, and work out where it came from and exactly where and when it will strike," he says. Typical performance data, substantiated by recent tests, show that the system will pick up and track within five seconds any small ballistic object such as mortar shells within a 20km radius. This gives a 25-second warning to troops in the impact area, and provides 360° target positioning with great precision. This is achieved by a marriage of software from the ARTHUR artillery locating system with the established Giraffe functionalities. This means the traditional Giraffe role - detection of larger objects within a 100km radius and up to 20km altitude -continues, while the new system guards against mortar and rocket attack. Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world. -ends- |
