http://www.military.com/NewContent/0,13190...ml?ESRC=navy.nl What Members Are Saying About Base Closures "Bases are placed in certain locations, at the request of the government. Not the retirees, not the mayor, not the chamber of commerce. Our military has every right to decide to close, or enlarge, or consolidate its bases. Some of you are blaming all this on President Bush. It is time that we all understand that this is an unprecedented new era that we live in. It's our money, let's go where they want us. Stop whining about base closings, they are an evil necessity." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Although these base closures would have eventually happened, it's important to point out that the last base closings took place in 1995. The recent round was prompted when President Bush threatened to veto an entire spending bill last year; although I think it's obvious to say that he didn't specifically pick the bases that will be closing. Regardless of the fact that I think that these closings would be taking place eventually, it really sucks that so many people will be losing jobs, and that as a result, businesses will suffer. Everything in those areas will suffer, and that will be in both blue and red states alike." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Some of the closures look to be reasonable, but others most definitely do not. Seems like simply scaling down some of the reserve centers would be a better idea, unless there is a nearby active duty location -- with space and opportunities available." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Everything opens and eventually closes. The whole structure of towns stays intact. You don't see Ford plants all over the place anymore, because things change for the better. These bases were built way back when, and the reason they were built (USSR) has packed up and left. The bottom line is VICTORY ends up putting everybody out of BEESWAX." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Good thinking, now they're gonna have submarine bases in Georgia. And they're closing bases on the east coast -- at the point of origin, no less. Boy do I feel safer already. Close 'em up and move 'em out -- to places like Uzebekistan -- and pretty soon they'll have Ford dealerships. The only lesson learned, is that red and blue states got the hammer alike. Evidently evil isn't as stupid as I thought." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "When the Pentagon makes base closure decisions on little more than the bottom line in consideration, they are pulling out on entire COMMUNITIES. I grew up in a military community of about 50,000 people. Pull the Air Force base out of that community with no other reason but to save money and you've affected more than the 12,684 people in that one town!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I understand and agree with the serious impact on the communities. I too grew up in and around military bases. I know the impact, especially on the retirees. Unfortunate. In the end we have to keep in mind that we work for Department of DEFENSE, not Department of SOCIAL WELFARE." |

Maine, N.H. Feel Sting Over Shipyard Associated Press June 10, 2005 KITTERY, Maine - The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard basked this spring in the glow of a Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation that praised workers at the 205-year-old base for their "phenomenal record" repairing nuclear attack submarines. A day later, the pendulum swung the other way, and cruelly. The Pentagon ticketed the shipyard for closing as part of a sweeping reorganization of military bases. "They pulled the rug from under us," town manager Jonathan Carter said bitterly. "To say we don't need you any more is a real blow to the worker, the community and the region." He's not the only one feeling betrayed. The Pentagon has proposed shutting 33 large bases and scores of smaller ones across the country to save $48 billion over 20 years. The burden would fall heavily on this coastal city along the New Hampshire border and the rest of Navy-dependent New England. Pentagon estimates show the overall region would absorb about half the net job losses - about 14,000 - on bases. Most of the New England jobs would be lost by the closure of the Portsmouth shipyard and the submarine base in Groton, Conn. http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,1331...ml?ESRC=navy.nl |

U.S. Army to vacate 13 bases in Germany Nearly 20,000 people will be affected by change, Pentagon says BERLIN - The U.S. Army will pull out of 13 bases in southern Germany as part of its repositioning of American forces around the world, its European headquarters said Friday. Eleven bases in and around the Bavarian city of Würzburg will be handed over to the German government by September 2007, the Army’s European headquarters in Heidelberg said. Two more bases near Würzburg will close and be handed over in subsequent years. The Defense Department said the changes will affect about 6,100 soldiers and 11,000 family members as well as about 1,000 Army civilian employees and 1,000 civilians employed locally. While facilities like the huge Ramstein Air Base, a hub for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, are being retained, Washington is bringing many units home and opening smaller, more flexible bases abroad to respond to new threats such as international terrorism. The new bases will host U.S.-based troops rotating through for shorter periods of time, without the schools and family housing that went with Cold War-era bases. Leftover from the Cold War The U.S. military still has about 62,000 service members based in Germany, a legacy of the Cold War. U.S. officials have said that will fall to as few as 20,000. The military has said a total of about 50,000 troops will be brought home from Germany and South Korea. The closures announced Friday are part of plans for most of the Würzburg-based 1st Infantry Division to return to the United States in mid-2006 and plans to relocate, convert and deactivate other parts of the Army’s 5th Corps. The military also has said it will move the Wiesbaden-based 1st Armored Division — the other main element of 5th Corps — out of Germany. The Pentagon reiterated Friday that it intends to base a mobile Stryker Combat Brigade Team in Vilseck, also in Bavaria, near the Army’s sprawling training range at Graefenwoehr, to be deployed in 2006 or 2007. The Pentagon identified the bases to close by September 2007 as: Harvey Barracks, Kitzingen Family Housing, Kitzingen Training Area, Larson Barracks and Schwanberg DCS Site, all in Kitzingen; Faulenberg Kaserne, Würzburg Training Areas, and Breitsol Communications Station, all in Wuerzburg, and Giebelstadt Army Airfield, Giebelstadt DYA Camp, and Giebelstadt Tactical Defense Facility in Giebelstadt. Leighton Barracks in Würzurg and Würzburg Hospital are to close later. |
