HU-16 Albatross amphibs. Many are still flying today. PAF couldn't maintain the planes anymore kaya ginawa na lang dekorasyon sa parke.

Website dedicated to the HU-16:

Saw in the web it's too expensive to maintain such old planes. Mostly collectors and tour groups owns one. It's better to get more helicopters for SAR.

One can simplify things by replacing the old engines with newer ones. Timawa.net had pictures of re-engined C-47s, I suspect a similar process could be done to these birds -- assuming ofcourse the airframes are still ok.

I agree. Quite a lot of fuel efficient turbo prop engines in the market today.

found some old pics i took at mactan in the mid 80s. poor quality but i could make out 3 f-5a, 5 nomads, 1 vip s-76, 1 rescue s-76, 1 vip s-70, 1 huey, 3 c-130, and 2 t-28. far cry from the broken c-130 and tailess mg-520 i saw during a visit in 2000 :armycry:

Britain just restored one of its Vulcan bombers and made it fly again, why not restore one of the PAF HU-16s? This could augment the newly-refurbished PN Islanders in maritime patrol, firefighting and SAR roles.

the US Navy did restore one of its HU-16 seaplanes:

very useful in rescuing downed pilots in open sea:

The Albatross was designed to be able to land at sea in open ocean situations in order to effect the rescue of downed pilots. Its deep-V cross-section and substantial length helped make it possible for it to land in wavy conditions.
