Mini-Missiles Mounted on Mini Warships

April 27, 2005: The Philippine Navy has been arming small patrol boats with portable anti-tank missiles, such the Israel's Spike. This is a fire and forget missile, which has a range of about 8 kilometers. It’s easy to operate, even when the launcher is bolted to the deck of a small speedboat. The seagoing Spike has proven useful in dealing with pirates, since the missile reportedly can blow out a hole in the hull of a fleeing, fast moving, pirate ship.

Other small navies seem to have done much the same thing for small patrol vessels and improvised fast attack craft, such as the popular Boghammer. Aside from their value in providing some serious firepower for small patrol craft, such light anti-tank weapons (under a hundred pounds for launcher, control system and one missile) have considerable potential value for terrorists. In some areas of the world the seas are fairly crowded with large numbers of small vessels, from fishing boats to trading vessels, through which large merchant ships and even warships have to make their way. With an 8 kilometer standoff, a weapon like the Spike could do considerable damage to a merchant vessel, or even a warship, if not physically, then at least symbolically. While the Israelis are careful who they sell the Spike to, similar Russian missiles, like the Kornet, have been known to find their way on to the black market.

I remember I wrote something like this in Opus forum, I raised the possibility of arming the PN ship with an anti tank missile I specifically mentioned the Israeli made Spike anti tank missile, I was not expecting that my idea is already in progress.

I hope this report is true, because arms and weapons manufacturers are known for releasing false news report, remember the reported KFIR? it was even on the net that PAF received KFIR from Israel, it was just a propaganda by the Israeli manufacturer to entice other foreign buyers

Can local defense reporters miss out on this?

Maybe just a small stash for very special missions? If ever, it won't be the first time these small purchases slip under the radar.

For example, only found out in this board that there's ac tually a small stockpile of Armbrust disposable launchers (PSG, then to marines; maybe the PSG got new AT4-CS or Javelin hehe...urban legend goes that the PSG actually has some Stingers). There's also those varied exotic rifles (lahat na yata nang klase) that just pop up with special units. Assuming this isn't a false report, maybe a small stash of Spike missiles to mount on the CB90 boat(s) guarding Malampaya. After all, they're probably not worried about (trying to) sink Chinese missile frigates, just a standoff weapon against ASG-type threat like that failed insurgent attack in Iraq sometime ago using boats on an offshore oil platform or something. Could even not have been directly sourced from Israel..Singapore has the Spike, and the Armbrust probably came from them too...hmm.

Or, of course, there's that other possiblity the report is just wrong. How can strategypage know and the rest of the world don't.

This is just my theory, maybe Petron, Shell, and the other local and foreign investors at Malampaya natural gas drilling site funded the acquisition of the spike anti tank missile of the PN, the missile is cheaper than the ASM and easy to install even in a small boat (bangka?). It is possible also that the acquisition of that reported missile came from other private donors, maybe the resort owners at our beautiful beaches like Boracay, El nido, and Dos Palmas funded the purchase of that missile.

It is a good investment for security it may not be able to do an extensive damage on the chinese warship but it certainly can blow a hole in the hull of the pirate ships, maybe it can damage small ships like the corvette.

Many investors located in our coastal areas are just worried from terrorist and pirate attack, so by helping the PN they can at least sleep at night. Btw the spike range is more than 10km, and at that range it almost beyond visual range

I have been looking for similar article in the past few days but nothing came up i guess or maybe its on trial stage thats why its not yet on the news. But then if the articlle is true as reported then that will be a good move for the navy. :specool:

I thought the rumor was the PSG had Mistral MANPADs

In the old Opus forum, MBLT (c/o of Opus) shared information that the Marines were testing the Armbrust. Not sure if they purchased them in large quantities though.

Relative to El Comandante's post, i would like to add my ten cents worth.

Someone told me this in confidence - but the report by now is probably well circulated among government energy and power circles - already that there are more substantial finds of natural gas in the malampaya area, much more substantial than the initial 4.8 bn mt originall discovered.

This led one American to retort (perhaps in jest, i dont really know) that the Philippine natural gas reserves makes the country a Philippine Saudi Arabia as far as natural gas is concerned.

knowing this, Shell is reported to be increasing exploration works. As of now, the natural gas plowed into the Batangas refinery amounts or translates to 3,000 megawatts of energy daily.

Shell is so bouyed up by this development such that it has earmarked a budget for improving the security in the area. Now as to whether or not the installation of Spike missiles on small PN boats is part of the Shell effort, i dont know about that. I think this is part of the new announcement by DND Sec Cruz that the PN with financial assistance from DOE, is acquiring several 78 footers. Also, the rehab of the S-76 for Pesos70 Million is part of the Malampaya security package.

I am probably endangering national security by discussing this but i know that many know this already and the more Filipinos who know makes the situation better, not only because this brings a ray of much needed sunshine to our benighted and distressed economy but also make people aware that we must pull together and unite instead of pulling each other down. WE must count our blessings. There are still many blessings to count for our country. I refuse to die with all the negative things in media.
