France's TYPE A69 class missile armed Frigate has been listed by some as a Corvette probably due to it's modest, full load displacement, but it's got good radar and other sensors. And the Israeli SA'AR 4 class Missile Fast Attack Craft do indeed possess the FIREPOWER of most modern Missile Corvette's. The aft 76mm Compacto gun could be removed and replaced with an Israeli made 8-cell VLS for Barak point defense Surface-to-Air Missiles or a 20mm Phalanx CIWS gun for super short range destruction of enemy anti-ship missiles, aircraft and helicopters. Both of these warships are equipped with Air and Surface search radars, fire control radars and navigation radars. However, the SA'AR 4 lacks sonar & ASW weapons. But in the past, some of the first MFAC's that Israel built were armed with Mk46 homing torpedoes and even a towed passive array sonar for shallow water operations near the coast. |
