In the graphic above, the $729B figure is not accurate....unless they are including the supplemental funds for operations in Iraq/Afghanistan?

The supplement would be approx $100B and are not used to buy aircraft carreirs, nukes, and stealth fighters....but only for maintaining the operations in Iraq/Afghanistan.

The true figure is closer to $630B...which is still huge, but I just wanted to set the record straight.

Also, it's basically a given that the $78B figure for China is a joke, and is most likely closer to twice that amount. The chicoms do a good job of hiding military costs, and we all know they are not an open/transparent government who is answerable to the taxpayer.

Gen Chen went on to suggest that the US spent too much money on its military, and said it would be a "better scenario" if the government spent more money on improving the livelihoods of its people.

:lollol:

Aren't they the ones supposed to be doing that?

China rejects UN arbitration to solve sea dispute

BEIJING - China on Tuesday rejected calls by the Philippines for the two nations to bring their conflicting claims in the South China Sea before a United Nations-backed tribunal.

"China always maintains that the South China Sea dispute should be resolved... through direct negotiations between directly concerned countries," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters.

He added the row should also be dealt with according to "recognized international laws."

China and the Philippines have overlapping claims to parts of the South China Sea, which is believed to hold vast mineral resources, as do Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario, who visited China last week, said he called for the dispute to go before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in his meetings with senior officials.

The tribunal is an independent judicial body established by UNCLOS, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to handle disputes.

Speaking to reporters after his visit, del Rosario said he pointed out that the Philippines' claims over parts of the South China Sea, including the Spratly islands, were "based on international law, specifically UNCLOS."

Chinese officials however said their claims were based on "historic rights", the secretary said.

The Philippines and Vietnam have in recent months accused China of taking increasingly aggressive actions in staking its claims in the disputed waters, including an incident where the Chinese allegedly fired on Filipino fishermen.

In April, the Philippines lodged a formal protest at the United Nations over China's claims.

This is really a problem with China insisting that UN tribunal to Resolve this Conflict should Stay Out. I guess we really have to beef-up our Military External Defenses to deter the THREAT... We fight for our historical rights too since its part of our Territorial Sovereignty and our ancestors sail across those waters. It is within the Philippines EEZ as given the UNCLOS.

I agree! the more reason we should consider our present situations on what we really NEED, to give PRIORITY to them and think of more quicker solutions to solve our AFP Modernizations.

A careful understanding and planning of what's needed re; Military Equipments to be acquired considering present and future scenarios.

UN can't to squat simply because China has a veto power.

Our only chance is if we give more money to defense spending and get closer to the United States?
Two qualities are indispensable: first, an intellect that, even in the darkest hour, retains some glimmerings of the inner light which leads to truth; and second, the courage to follow this faint light wherever it may lead.

Yes I agree with you Mr.T, for now this is the only way we'll be able to survive any threats against China.. We really must "up the ante" all of our External Defences.

But were in god's name will we get the cash of it and if we do and a big IF it is how are we going to defend it from corrupt Generals and officials?

And lastly can we make up for lost time?

Applying mathematical longtitudinal and latitudinal computations and international laws, every UN official handling these Spratly Islands case would all come to the conclusion that these islands are ours or belong to the Philippines. They occupy areas nearest our shores and covered by the archipelagic doctrine. But I wish these issues would be resolved peacefully and that 'no man seeking death woud dare dispute the decision of the international tribunals which would be resolved inn our favour (unless the person agrees to a bribe which is common occurences inn UN). Just like how the Arctic would be ressolved in favour of canada, the Spratlys decision would not be an issue for President Hu who among many in the Chinese congress is not 'seeking death'.

As one of the many agents of influence for China, Jose Maria Sison would surely dispute the decision if resoved in our favour, the Philippines'. Betting my last 100 thousand dollars. Establishing a Beijing puppet regime here in the Philippines does amount to the same patriotic fervour he has on this issue.
