US, Japan, Australia plan West Philippine Sea drill Agence France-Presse 7:47 pm | Friday, July 8th, 2011 0share3 3 TOKYO—The US, Japanese and Australian navies will Saturday hold a joint drill in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea)—most of which China claims as its maritime territory—Japan’s defense ministry said. Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force will send destroyer Shimakaze to join a US Navy destroyer and a Royal Australian Navy patrol boat for communications training and other drills off Brunei, the defense ministry said Friday. It will be their first joint military exercise in the West Philippine Sea, most of which an increasingly assertive China claims as its maritime territory, but where the Philippines and several other Southeast Asian nations have competing claims. “The exercise is aimed at enhancing tactical skills of the Maritime Self-Defense Force and strengthening relations with the participating navies,” the ministry said in a statement. Tensions in the strategic and resource-rich West Philippine Sea have escalated in recent weeks, with the Philippines and Vietnam voicing alarm at what they say are increasingly forceful Chinese actions there. They include accusations of Chinese forces opening fire on Filipino fishermen, shadowing an oil exploration vessel employed by a Philippine firm, and putting up structures in areas claimed by the Philippines. Vietnam voiced anger after a Chinese vessel in May cut the exploration cables of a Vietnamese survey ship. The West Philippine Sea includes the Spratlys, a chain of islands believed to sit on vast mineral resources. http://globalnation.inquirer.net/558...medium=twitter |

Oooooooooh.......... China hardliners to teach Spratly intruders ‘a lesson’ By Ellen Tordesillas, VERA Files http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/-depth/07...esson%E2%80%99 Hardliners in the Chinese Military Academy are raring to teach China’s neighbors “a lesson” for intruding into the South China Sea, which they consider part of their national territory, a Chinese Southeast Asian expert said. Shen Hong-Fang, professor and senior research fellow at the Center of Southeast Asian studies at Xiamen University, spoke of “a new upsurge” of Chinese nationalism set off by claims made by some Asian countries, including the Philippines, over territory China considers its own. “Some suggested that it is the right time to adopt necessary measures to teach some countries a lesson,” Shen said, startling participants at the two-day Conference on the South China Sea held in Manila last week. She added there are those who think it justifiable “for China to launch a war against the invaders.” The Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia have staked claims over some of the 160 islands that constitute the Spratlys in the South China Sea. These countries, along with Indonesia which is a non-claimant, have filed protests before the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) over the “nine-dash line map” China submitted to prove its claim. That map practically covers the whole of the South China Sea and encroaches over the 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone of some its neighbors, the Philippines included. Brunei and Taiwan are also claiming parts of the Spratlys. In its note verbale last April 14, China accused the Philippines of having “started to invade and occupy some islands and reefs of China’s Nansha (Spratly) Islands.” Asked by Paranaque Rep. Roilo Golez about the role of the Chinese Military Academy in the leadership’s decisions, Shen said it is “a very influential group. “ The Chinese Military Academy, formally known as the Academy of Military Sciences (AMS), is the highest-level research institute and center of military sciences of the People’s Liberation Army which is a major force in the Chinese government. A Philippine diplomat who requested anonymity said Shen would not be making such strong statements without the approval of the Chinese government. Shen reiterated previous declarations of Chinese officials that the South China Sea is a “core interest,” just like Tibet and Taiwan. She quoted a published statement by Han Xudong, an army colonel and a professor at the PLA’s National Defense University (NDU), that “China’s comprehensive national strength especially in military capabilities is not yet enough to safeguard all of the core national interests.” Golez expressed concern over what China would do “if their ‘national strength especially in military capabilities’ would be enough to take care of all core national interests.” Shen also quoted another NDU professor, Zhang Zhongzhao, as saying that “the best time of solving the territory disputes has already passed” and that “diplomaticnegotiations alone cannot solve the problem.” She described Zhang as “a well-known military theorist,” and further quoted him saying that to defend national sovereignty, the Chinese should have the “courage to use the sword if it is really needed.” Shen said the Chinese government is under public pressure to stand firm on the South China Sea. “If China lost more territory to foreign states, the national honor would be under attack and the people and the army would question the legitimacy of the government,” she said. “It is of utmost importance that the government is not considered by people or the army as internally or externally weak which in turn could have severe political consequences,” she added. Included in Shen’s recommendations to ease tension in the South China Sea is joint exploration in disputed areas. The Philippines already took this step during the term of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo when it started a Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking (JMSU) with China and Vietnam, which was completed in 2008. At least 70 percent of the coverage of the JMSU is in areas claimed by the Philippines. The constitutionality of the agreement is being questioned in the Supreme Court. The Manila SCS conference was organized by the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the National Defense College of the Philippines and the Development Academy of Vietnam. |

OT: Thank you for the corrections mr. Zero Wing. Indeed some of them have fought for the Nationalists, and yet a few thousands of them remained patriotic who have called the philippine islands as their new home. In fact, very little have been said about the Filipino-Chinese freedom fighters in the Philippines during World War II. Without them, history would not be completed how the war was also fought by a Filipino minority – who have acquitted themselves in the resistance movement during the war of the United States against Japan that involved both Filipinos and Chinese-Filipinos (Chilipinos). There were 1,000 chinese-filipinos were captured by the Japanese Imperial Army during the assault in manila and bataan. There were more than a thousand of chinese-filipino Freedom Fighters who originally fought along side with the filipinos and americans. This is all according to a former guerilla intelligence unit during the war, only known us Mr. Sun. They were a patriotic resistance group earned its name as “Ampaw Unit” – posing as “puff rice” vendors, highly disciplined and trained intelligence operatives, with its own combat unit. |

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-14097503 American and Chinese military chiefs have argued over US exercises in the South China Sea, after high-level talks in Beijing. Chinese army chief Gen Chen Bingde said the exercises with the Philippines and Vietnam were "extremely inappropriate". But at a joint news conference, Adm Mike Mullen said the US would continue to support its allies in the region. Overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea have sparked tension in recent months. China, Vietnam and Taiwan all claim sovereignty over huge areas of the sea, including the Paracel and Spratly island groups. The Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei also claim overlapping areas of territory. The US has recently held joint drills with the Philippines and is planning a similar move with Vietnam, saying the exercises are part of a regular schedule. But Gen Chen accused the Americans of repeatedly promising not to intervene in the South China Sea while "sending the opposite signal to the world". "It carried out joint military exercises in the South China Sea with Vietnam and the Philippines, although they did it before, it is extremely inappropriate to do it at this particular time," he said. Gen Chen went on to suggest that the US spent too much money on its military, and said it would be a "better scenario" if the government spent more money on improving the livelihoods of its people. Adm Mullen, who is in China for a four-day visit, rebuffed the criticism and insisted that the US would continue exercises with its regional allies. Before the meeting, Adm Mullen had expressed concern about the growing row between China, the Philippines and Vietnam. He warned that misunderstandings could lead to "an outbreak that no-one anticipated". In a speech to university students, he said: "The United States is deepening its commitment to this region and the alliances and partnerships that define our presence there. "We are, and will remain, a Pacific power, just as China is a Pacific power." During a visit to the US in May, Gen Chen said China had no intention to match US military power. He said America's armed forces remained far more advanced than China's despite considerable progress by China in recent years. Correspondents say both sides are trying to boost military co-operation, but there are still significant underlying tensions. As well as the recent spike in tension in the South China Sea, the two nations also have a history of acrimony over Taiwan. In 2010, Beijing severed military contacts with Washington in response to US arms sales to the island. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory.
