Navy: Foreign jet harasses PHL fishing boat off Spratlys
07/04/2011 | 09:55 PM

An unidentified foreign jet harassed a Filipino fishing boat last month at the disputed Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), Navy chief Vice Admiral Alexander Pama said Monday.

The incident occurred June 4 at the Dalagang Bukid Shoal, located about 131 nautical miles from Puerto Princesa City, according to Pama.

“The unidentified jet buzzed our fishing boat about 20 to 30 feet from the top of the mast of the fishing boat," Pama said. “The fishermen were not able to identify the origin [of the plane]. They just said it’s a jet because it produced a loud sound."

He said the jet “frightened" the fishermen.

“It’s not a normal thing for an aircraft to fly over you at that altitude. Initially, it's some sort of warning. What are doing here, something like that," Pama said.

The Philippines has been accusing China, a fellow claimant in the dispute over the Spratly Islands, of recently making aggressive moves to intensify its claim over the oil- and mineral-rich group of islands.

Last March, two Chinese patrol ships harassed a Department of Energy ship conducting oil explorations at the Reed Bank. Two months later, two Air Force bomber planes on reconnaissance patrol at the Spratlys were harassed by fighter jets believed to be from China.

Apart from China and the Philippines, the other claimants to the Spratlys are Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia. - KBK, GMA News

It's about time we attack those jets from the Greedy Big Bad Bully.

We need those new fighter jets fast.

Let's confront and shoot down these bullies.

I guess the fishermen should arm themselves w/ AK47, cellphones, radios, and cameras next time so they could shoot those bastards themselves w/ live bullets, takes video and call the cops or coast guard/PN! They are within the 200 EEZ so itstheir right to defend themselves from bullies.

Parang China suddenly change their methods to assert their claims and this time they are sending off a Fighter jet kasi no one would clearly identify a jet that fast and at low altitude...

Issuehan na lang Fishermen ng Garand M1 and fire them like Anti-aircraft guns. For sure tatamaan ang engine ng Big 30cal. bullets nito. Ngayon kung meron nagprotesta sa bansa then we will know that its them that sends it. Tayo naman ang magprotesta for their Intrusions... Kung meron lang tayong Stinger at mag-assign ng two PN Soldiers that would fire those Stingers then next time. Dapat mag-iingat na sila otherwise they will be shootdown.

The AFP should speed up the acquisition of combat aircraft to give challenge to these kind of incidents. If the US still have bases here, the Reds wouldn't even dare dream of doing this kind of incursions.

They should send some elite soldiers disguised as fishermen to the region - with high-resolution cameras to document these intrusions and to identify the origin of the jets.
