If we think about it.. What former President Marcos did in PAG ASA Island was a very clever move, and it serves as our hidden ACE in our Cards with regards to claims in KIG. Declaring it a Municipality of Palawan with Filipino Civilians and Soldiers living there permanently and held Local elections their since then by virtue of Presidential Decree making it technically part of the Mainland and a loop hole by law maybe for the MDT to take effect in case some hostile Country attacks or try to occupy PAG ASA, coincidentally Our "PAG ASA!" for the claims. |

Nice find! Very interesting read from 14 years ago. I especially found the part about China's intentions and how they could develop from cooperative and benign to provocative military posturing and domination. I think the next 14 years will prove to be even more prophetic. |

US sends destroyer to region amid Spratlys tension THE United States is deploying the Pearl Harbor-based guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon to the Western Pacific amid escalating tension between China and its neighbors over the oil-rich Spratly islands. The US Navy said the ship’s 280 sailors were expected to work with coalition partners also in the region. The vessel left the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam base in Hawaii Wednesday. Last year, the Chung-Hoon and the Philippine Coast Guard practiced boarding and searching vessels in the Sulu Sea when the destroyer went to the region. The ship provided support for US and Philippine counterinsurgency efforts against militants in the southern part of the Philippines. It also participated in exercises with other United States forces off Guam and in drills with the Singapore navy. The Obama administration was quietly shifting its strategic focus toward more emphasis on Southeast Asia, due to the recognition that the region’s importance is growing in the military, diplomatic, and trade arenas, the Foreign Policy magazine reported in its Web site Friday. “[T]here has been really extraordinary progress made, particularly in the last couple of years or so with a number of countries in strengthening our military-to-military relationships and our overall relationship with Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Australia certainly, as well as our traditional allies in Thailand, Japan, and Korea,” Foreign Policy quoted outgoing US Defense Secretary Robert Gates. On Thursday, President Aquino said the Philippines would file a new protest at the United Nations accusing China of territorial incursion. China’s embassy in Manila earlier denied the Philippine government’s allegations its ships intruded into the Spratly Islands close to the Philippine coast to build new structures and fortify its claim in the potentially oil-rich region. Mr. Aquino said he was still hoping to visit Beijing later this year.AP http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideN...&d=2011/june/4# ![]() USS Chung-Hoon |

good news for this... I tell you guys the best strategy right now is to create an alliance with the countries threatened by China; namely; Vietnam, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, South korea, and Taiwan. Most of these countries have modern assets they can pour in the area, in return we can give them some concessions in oil exploration, especially Japan and South Korea who are starving for oil. Thanks for the support of the USN too. If we succeed in forming a strong defense alliance with the mentioned countries we can at least keep Beijing at bay on its aggressive intentions in the area. In the meantime we have to continue with modernization by all means at all costs. Maybe we need Bong Bong Marcos as next president. I think he will try to erase what wrong doing his father did by rebuilding the country strong, he is also highly educated and intelligent. |

Vietnam is even claiming more islands than any other claimants there. But i guess we dont have any other options than to befriend all the claimants, and focus on diplomacy rather than approaching it militarily. The RP government really sucks! They all waited til this thing happened before they even thought about some serious mini arms buying spree. They all had their chances to spend the taxpayers money in 1992 when the US military left Subic and Clark.... WTF! And what happened to their previous plans of arming the 3 Jacinto Class patrol vessels with exocet missiles? Bunch of selfish bastards who stole our parent's taxes! WTF! Where is the government's all out support?! They all been busy whining about RH and divorce bills while letting those freaking chinese posting their flags over our claimed islands!

Are you really that surprised? The Philippines has lost every major war it was involved in: not because our soldiers were not good enough - I am convinced they were and still are -, but because of lack of proper equipment. Not much has changed eversince 1896. |
