MANILA, Philippines—The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has allocated P31 million to repair the dilapidated runway on Philippine-occupied Pag-asa Island within the disputed Spratlys chain of islands in the South China Sea.

“That’s a standing order. We are going to undertake the rehabilitation of the runway as soon as possible. We need to address this immediately. As a matter of fact we have allotted P31 million for the repairs,” AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Eduardo Oban Jr. told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo Monday.

Oban also said they are preparing a list of naval and aerial patrol assets and radar equipment to be bought with the P8 billion earlier earmarked by President Benigno Aquino III to upgrade military facilities in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) which is claimed by the Philippines.

The KIG is within the Spratlys chain of islands which is claimed wholly and partly by the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.

Kalayaan is considered a municipality of Palawan province.

Its biggest island, Pag-asa, has an airstrip and basic facilities for the group of soldiers stationed on it who get by with a monthly delivery of supplies. But the airstrip has been long neglected and can no longer be used.

“We shall continue our presence in the area, particularly in the protection of our resources,” Oban said.

PAGASA ISLAND, Kalayaan, Philippines -- The military has released P31 million for the rehabilitation of the air strip here located in the disputed Spratlys chain in the South China Sea, which officials want to develop as a tourist spot.

The amount is enough only for the eastern portion of the air strip and additional funding is needed for the western part, Defense Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. said in an interview with reporters here.

"We released funds already for the repair of the runway… The air strip itself needs improvement. We will see how we can source additional funds," said Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Hermogenes Esperon Jr.

This is old news 2008? 3 years ago!

If the Contractor won't honor what is in the contract and doesn't want to go through with it, then sue that A-hole to the ground!

But I suggest for the PAF to find a credible contractor as soon as possible to get this thing done because the materials for the upgrade are ready for delivery on the first quarter of 2008.:wow:

But where are these Materials now???

Just hire or use PN ship BRP Dagupan City (LC-551), a Bacolod City class LSV to bring the Materials to KIG and take out the expenses from the contracted budget... :dunno:

PHL protests China's '9-dash line' claim over Spratlys

Quote:

The Philippines has lodged a diplomatic protest against China’s “9-dash line" territorial claim over the whole of the South China Sea, a month before President Benigno Simeon Aquino’s planned state visit to Beijing.

The Philippine protest, dated April 5, was posted by the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) as document No. 000228 on April 8.

However, the Philippine government tarried in filing the protest, doing so two years after Vietnam and Malaysia, and a year after Indonesia. Vietnam and Malaysia filed their protest a day after China submitted its 9-dash line map to the UN on May 7, 2009.

Indonesia registered its protest a year ago, even if it did not have a claim on the South China Sea.

The map is called “9-dash line" or “9-dotted line" because it shows a series of nine dashes or dotted lines forming a ring around the South China Sea area, which China claims is part of its territory.

China rejects Phl sovereignty over Spratly Islands

Quote:

MANILA, Philippines – The Chinese government cannot accept the claims of the Philippines on its sovereignty over some islands in South China Sea, a high ranking official of China said today.

This after the Philippine government filed a protest before the United Nation, claiming control over parts of Nansha Islands, parts of the Kalayaan Group of Islands.

In a regular briefing in Beijing today, spokesman of China’s foreign ministry Hong Lei said: “China has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and adjacent waters.”

“China owns sovereignty and jurisdiction over the related sea area, seabed and subsoil,” Hong pointed out.

“The sovereignty of China over the South China Sea and related rights and jurisdiction are well-grounded from both historical and legal perspectives,” Hong added.

Early last month, the China insists sovereignty on the area where a Filipino ship, searching for oil near the disputed Spratly Islands, were allegedly harassed by Chinese patrol boats.

In a statement, Ethan Sun, China’s spokesman and deputy chief of Political Section here, said his nation has sovereignty over the area where the reported harassment happened.

"China has INDISPUTABLE sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and adjacent waters.” Those words are very tough that even we cooperate to them with De Venecia's formula on equal sharing ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S70xq-jP7jc...re=related)will not work out.
I think We should continue to internationalize the issue legally until the ICJ in Hamburg and the opinion of world powers prevail.

These guys are really out of their mind considering they are almost 1K more NMI away from KIG area and just because it's called S.China sea that doesn't mean they own the whole area....

The more reason we should worry about it especially, future oil explorations in Reed Bank area or try to kick us out for good in KIG. :armyskeptic:

China just recently had a Military exercise using it's H6 Bombers like preparing for something...... :dunno: Unlike the US, they're not at war.....

We Filipinos shouldn't be deterred by all these things, and the more we should be prepared and not to give in or they will keep on doing it to us!

A situation similar to "Falklands Conflict" can and may happen and there are signs, recent situations occurred, firm words of both China and our Philippine Government power projections, remember what they did to those unarmed Vietnamese Sailors that were massacred by them so we should be prepared and ready for anything!

The big problem now is how can we protect our Soldiers in KIG if something like this happens, if for example they use bombers in KIG? We don't even have MRF's to intercept their Bombers if ever....? for sure it will have few escorts? hopefully! how? "AIR POWER PLAYS A BIG ROLE" and we don't have it!

This is what I've been saying, about how can they afford to follow the CUP sched or the AFP Modernizations when the PAF Branch doesn't have it's Main basic Superiority FORCE???? so that if something like this happens, we have something to use! DECOMMISSIONING OF F5's = REPLACEMENTS!!!

It's the same when those stupid politikos kicked out the US Bases, without making sure first to fully equipped and Modernized our AFP first, before thinking of kicking them out!: :headbang:

It's better for us to be fully prepared for anything!
