China tells U.S. to keep out of South China Sea dispute

BEIJING (Reuters) – China told the United States not to interfere in a regional dispute over claims to the South China Sea, saying it would only complicate the matter.

Japan's NHK TV reported last week that the United States and southeast Asian countries may announce a joint statement on September 24 that obliquely presses China over its recent activities near disputed isles in the South China Sea.

China has been increasingly strident in asserting its territorial claims, especially maritime ones.

In the past week, it has suspended high-level exchanges with Japan and promised tough counter-measures after a court there extended the detention of the captain of a Chinese boat which collided with two Japanese coastguard ships near disputed islands.

"We express great concern about any possible South China Sea announcement made by the United States and the ASEAN countries," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a regular news briefing. ASEAN is the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

"We resolutely oppose any country which has no connection to the South China Sea getting involved in the dispute, and we oppose the internationalization, multilateralization or expansion of the issue. It cannot solve the problem, but make it more complicated," she said.

Washington has criticized Chinese claims to swathes of the South China Sea, where Taiwan and several ASEAN members including Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines also assert sovereignty.

China says it has sovereignty over the seas, home to valuable fishing grounds and largely unexploited oil and natural gas fields.

It reacted with anger in July when the United States brought up the issue at a regional meeting, further souring ties between Beijing and Washington already under strain from spats over the value of the Chinese currency, Tibet and Taiwan.

While there have been no military clashes in the seas for years, China and some of the other claimants have been building up their military presence in the region.

The Government consider fitting the AFP bases in the are with proper air-defense systems and land-based BrahMos cruise missiles.

China is very aggressive to the point that they will accuse you of firing their boats and will have reasons to use force to evict our Military from occupying those islets....
Very dangerous what China is doing right now coz you never know when will they attack us...

If someone is determined to take over, it will happen the sooner or later. But it is better to have something to protect your own country with - even if the defense lasts only for a short time. It sometimes seems to me that of all the South-East Asian nations, only the Philippines has not learned a lesson from the colonial era...

What worries me is that mindset of our PAF Officers especially the spokesperson who was quoted on a TV Documentary Show that the country doesn't need a High-technology Fighter jets coz there are no countries that we can called Our Enemies?

I watched that on TV but I can't remember what channel (UNTV I guess)....

Whether we have enemies or not, Defense of our Country and Territorial Interests shouldn't be COMPROMISE...a Lean, Mean and Credible Airforce and Navy should be form..

Or just sell all the gas in the Spratlys to another country (not China!) and use the money to fund the Military modernization programme and to strengthen the economy of the RP. If things get much worse, we will lose those islands anyways: so better make some of use of them.
I'm sure the Russians and Americans will be interested in gas and oil...
There would also an additional benefit: foreign investors would not want their assets to be harmed by any aggressive force in the region.

( i copied this from the NEAR OUR WATERS discussion under NAVY thread)

Where were these activists and Biazon when China planted their flag in Mischief Reef?

In all happened under the stewardship of a coward Fidel Ramos too.

The SWAGs could have blasted the makeshift structure (image 1) even before the Chinese were able to pour concrete on it (image 2).

During a flight over the area last week, one gray Chinese navy frigate and a white research vessel could be seen lying at anchor; merchant ships with supplies make the long trip from the Chinese mainland at least twice a month with food, water and building materials. A Chinese flag flies over one of the two concrete structures, which are built on opposite sides of the circular reef, and men came out to watch the plane as it circled low overhead. Each structure has living quarters, a command post with observation tower and water tanks resting on pylons that have been driven into the coral. Behind the larger of the two buildings a flat area is being prepared with landfill; officials in Manila suspect it will be a helicopter landing pad. From the plane, the Philippine pilots picked up radio traffic but could not understand the Chinese being spoken. They said that on more than one occasion the Chinese have fired warning shots from anti-aircraft guns at the approach of Philippine planes.

After several passes the pilots turned back toward Palawan, but on the way they descended to check out another reef, the Sabina Shoal, which is even closer to the Philippines and on which Chinese marker buoys have been found--and blown up--by the navy before. The Chinese have a well-rehearsed routine when laying claim to a new reef: first they put down buoys, then they build concrete markers. Temporary wooden or bamboo shelters follow, and if they are still not challenged, the permanent military forts go up. The Philippines tries to blow up the buoys or the markers before China has time to build and occupy larger structures.

:dunno:

And now that there are no more planes to monitor the islands, what can we expect? Those buoys will stay, and the encroachment will progress even more.

Mabuhay! :headbang:
