Vietnam protests China's law on island protection
2009-12-30 11:30:00

Vietnam has protested a new Chinese law aimed at protecting the nation's islands, including the disputed Spratly and Paracel Islands in the South China Sea, local media reported Wednesday.

'Vietnam has time and again affirmed its sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly archipelagos,' Vietnam News quoted government spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga as saying.

'All activities of other countries, including the promulgation of legal regulations relating to these archipelagos and Vietnam's Exclusive Economic Zone and continental shelf, are of no legal value.'

Nga made her comments in response to queries about Vietnam's reaction to the passage of a law on sea island protection approved by the Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee Dec 26.

According to the law, China is to strengthen the protection of the ecosystem, the rational utilisation of natural resources and sustainable development on the country's islands.

The law bans all construction projects, tree felling and tourism activities on uninhabited islands. It also prohibits activities that could damage coral and coral reefs.

The new law puts China's State Oceanic Administration and its branches in charge of monitoring compliance.

China claims more than 6,900 islands, each having an area of over 500 square metres and more than 10,000 smaller islets, including the Paracel and Spratly Islands.

China has occupied the Paracel Islands since 1974, when its troops overwhelmed a South Vietnamese garrison occupying the islands.

Both Vietnam and China are signatories to the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. It commits the parties to resolving the islands' status through negotiations and provides for freedom of navigation.

Vietnam and China generally enjoy close relations, but the conflict over maritime resources is a persistent source of tension. Each country submitted maritime territorial claims to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in early May and rejected the other's claims shortly afterward.

The South China Sea is believed to contain substantial undersea oil reserves.

Does anyone have a recent update on those illegal ChiCom structures at Mischief Reef? I noted too that none of the presidentiables have touched upon this subject.
Command is about authority, about appointment to a position. Effective leadership is different. It must be learned and practiced in order for it to rise to the level of art. You must love those you lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment but you cannot lead without it; and without leadership, command is a hollow experience. .. a vacuum often filled with mistrust and ignorance.

Full steam ahead for China's territorial ambitions

In a famous maxim, China's late leader Deng Xiaoping urged his countrymen to "hide your brightness, bide your time". That was more than 20 years ago. It now seems China's leaders have finished biding their time.

In an assertive redefinition of its place in the world, China has put the South China Sea into its "core national interest" category of non-negotiable territorial claims - in the same league as Taiwan and Tibet. China has drawn a red line down the map of Asia and defies anyone to cross it.

It brings China into direct conflict with the claims of five neighbours, and challenges the US Navy's dominance of the waters. One-third of all commercial shipping in the world passes through the waters now claimed exclusively by China, the sea bounded by Taiwan in the north, Vietnam in the west, the Philippines in the east and Malaysia and Brunei in the south.

It contains oil and gas fields; some Chinese analysts have dubbed it "Asia's Persian Gulf" for its potential oil wealth and its fractiousness. It is particularly inflammatory because China's government is repudiating its non-binding 2002 agreement with its South-East Asian neighbours to solve territorial disputes through peaceful negotiation.

It's a crisis, but a quiet one. That's mainly because the affronted countries are reacting with wary restraint towards their burgeoning neighbour. Vietnam has pointedly demanded China observe the agreement, but the others have been almost inaudible.

Its in the news again .....you can bet whoever ends up owning the Spratley Islands... there will be sabotage of their oil deep sea explorations and everyone will lose ... Look at the current Gulf Oil Crisis... All this will simmer down when we start to use alternative fuel and solar power... no one will want these islands...Its all about oil and nothing else... Once the word oil popped up.. Everyone started to scramble and claim it was theirs.....Greedy Hands...

Our Government can speak: but that's all it can. Sure, we have a right to those islands, but who cares? Seriously: does anyone expect great military powers like China to care about the big mouths of Philippine Govt. officials? How much did the Chinese care for what the Tibetans had to say?

It is about time for the RP to start installing some BrahMos missiles in the area...

In my view...The issue is a done deal for China....They are booming at a rapid pace and will fight for the island if come to that...No one can afford to get that oil out of the ground at this stage of the game if in fact... and it would take years and infrastructure and transshipments and a logistical nightmare due to the abundance of coral reefs making it dangerous and arduous for vessels to get in and out..... The US is sort of in a quagmire because China practically controls the USA through its buying of 900 billion dollars of debt.. Japan is second with about 800 billion dollars. So there are some factors on why the US will not intervene in this fight...They dont have a dog in that fight for sure... If China was to start selling its treasury notes, the US will be in dire straits. That will insure that the US stays out of the issues that China pursue.. So much for overhead cover for the other countries who depend on the US for air and sea power assistance. The middle east will also retaliate and make oil so cheap to the consumers that it would be costly to drill if they perceive that this new oil will cut into their profits. Also its only hearsay that there is an abundance of oi or natural gasl. No real complete exploration has been done. The key word is "POTENTIAL" but it is rich in an abundance of fish.. thats for sure...
