This is the main island of Pag-asa in the Kalayaan Islands Group, our islands in the South China Sea near Palawan.

To make it simple, I heard in the news that the UN is now drafting the borders in the dispute.

If those borders are in effect, we will have the largest share of the islands.

China objects to RP oil project

(philstar.com) Updated August 15, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - China rejects Philippine plans to extract oil from the Reed Bank in the disputed South China Sea as a violation of Chinese sovereignty, Beijing's ambassador said yesterday.

China claims almost the entire sea, including the Spratlys which are also partly claimed by the Philippines. Reed Bank is in the South China Sea but is closest to Palawan island, which is uncontested Philippine territory.

Jose Raymond Apostol, president of Forum Energy Philippines Corp., which has completed its geophysical survey and exploration contract, says it is only waiting for a go-ahead from the Department of Energy to begin extracting oil.

Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes earlier said the contract was still being evaluated because some government departments may have concerns about it. He refused to elaborate, but local media reports quoted unnamed sources as saying government was proceeding with caution because the area is part of a survey completed by China, the Philippines and Vietnam last year to find possible petroleum reserves in the disputed sea.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jianchao said while China is against the contract, he is confident the matter can be settled through negotiations.

"China has its claims over this part of the sea. If something is done unilaterally by the Philippine side, it is a violation of the sovereignty of China," Liu told reporters.

The Reed Bank, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) west Palawan, is within the country's 320-kilometer exclusive economic zone. It is closer to Palawan than the Philippine-claimed Kalayaan Island Group in the Spratlys.

Liu suggested, however, that unilateral economic activity is not allowed in areas where there is a territorial dispute.

Studies have shown the Reed Bank could contain some 3.4 trillion cubic feet of gas and potentially 440 million barrels of oil.

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan also claim parts or all of about 100 islets, reefs and atolls in the Spratlys, which straddle the world's busiest shipping lanes and are believed to be rich in oil, gas and fish.

Definitely Reed Bank is inside the 200 miles Exclusive Economic Zone as mentioned by the UN Conference on Law of Sea whether it was measured from the Continental Shelf or from PGMA and Miriam-sponsored new Philippine Territory's baseline.

However the new Baseline Law have complicated the status of our Kalayaan Islands Group and the Reed Bank. The new Baseline Law which lessen our territory have weakened our claims and emboldened the PRC Chinese to became more aggressive and mayabang.

Our country must start the oil drilling in Reed Bank and should not be cowed by the warlike behaviour of the neo-colonialist and neo-imperialist Peoples Republic of China and Taiwan. Our only problem is the unpatriotic and treacherous national leaders who have sold our national interest to China

The Spratly Islands claim of the Philippines thru the
UNCLOS and follows international law 200 miles from the
archipelagic baseline, 400 miles economic zone.
Palawan and it's nearby islang groups are the basis for all
Philippine claims in the Spratlys.

Their sword will become our plow, and from the tears of war the daily bread of future generations will grow.
